My current project is to make some window frames for our barn / stable 'conversion'.
Ever on the look-out for ways to make life more difficult for myself, i want to make them out of some old oak joists that were from elsewhere.
Here is the wood -
You can see it cleans up nicely -
I want an "old" contrasting with "modern" look, but i dont want to use wood that is too out of square. Ie i dont want it to look like the inside of some hippies van (driftwood).
I have limited timber, so ill try and keep mainly to square bits, but ill probably have to use some rounded / carved bits.
Im hoping that these will be as bad as i need to use -
The oak is 3" x 4" (ish).
Here is a CAD design of what i want to achieve -
Basically two sheets of glass (argon filled sealed units) set in the oak.
I want it to go into this area -
The whole job will be sat on a small wall, with a floor level utilities duct, capped with 45mm slate, set at an angle. Eg -
I think im going to get a wicks pre-made hardwood door frame for the door. One of these kits -
The windows will not open.
Things i do not know -
Exactly what joints im going to use.
How, how deep, etc. that im going to cut the rebates for the windows.
How im going to treat the wood.
How im going to seal the glass to the wood on the external face so as water does not get in.
Anyone got any suggestions for any of them?
