Chunko, you won't get a good looking rivet-like finish with a crappy gasless set up. But I don't need to tell you that.

I feel like a troll even saying anything, as I know I'm just going to get an earful for suggesting that a sow's ear really isn't a silk purse, but there it is. I'll not learn my lesson will I?

I must agree on one point though, a crappy buzz box will beat a crappy mig every time. Are we going off topic again? I believe so.

thats them coach bolts.

The ones I've seen are galvanized, I think.

What finish and size (M or mm.) bolts are you using?

I'll try it with gasless vs arc.

Dome nuts? I know the ones.
They would not do the job. I am after a look that is not bolted up.

Arc welding? I thought of this but I dont have an arc welder, I am not to familiar with it and I dont fancy chipping the slag of 130 small welds.

Also with the Mig it is easy to control the deposition, make a circle round the edge of the hole, pause then a smaller circle, spiral in to the middle,smaller pause then a dab on top and no crater.

the ones I am using I bought years back for a time wasting customer, they are M8 and unplated, perfick!

I had thought of trying Oxy/acetylene, I did ry it indoors worked quite well, but I have not gothe the thingy that goes under tha dome end of the rivet (set?) and I have about 130 of them to some up 3m up a ladder on a stucture that has some wobbliness.

So it is get bag of the bolts pre lopped to length, get my welder to my customers wair for a windles day and get stuck in, I reckon about 1 minute each., maybe less. I have a clamp that I modified to hold the onto the workpiece from the head end.

My bloody interefering wife even suggested I make a gas shield to clamp over them. How dare she!!! I was going to do this anyway, but hey Chunkoletta understands what her useless bloke gets up to. I was well impressed. I reckon a short length of tube tacked onto the clamp. I will put a post up when I get this sorted.

You can make your own set, make a positive punch an old cold chisel or punch grind it to the shape you want your rivets to be. Heat up a piece of steel your going to use as your set and hammer your punch into it (quench your everynow and again and keep your set hot) When your happy quench your set polish it up a bit and temper it.

I was reading another post on here about making a spinning tool for setting rivets on chainsaw blades, and it got me thinking about modifying an impact socket in a similar way to the above and using it with a windy gun to see if that would work to make decent rivet heads not much use to you at the moment but it might be worth thinking about if you ever have a lot of riviting to do.

Chunko, just wondering why you don't use 'proper' rivets rather than bolts? Cheap, untreated steel in lots of shapes and sizes (heads, shafts etc) - would prob look a bit better, and you could use the same method?

Or how about using copper or something and bashing your own proper (as in genuine, hand bashed) rivets in by hand?

It's a construction technique and decorative.
As a sculptor I have almost a phobia about nuts and bolts being visible in my work.
In the photo I have two lengths of 30x 5mm strip forming sections of a dome.

They initially bolt together, then I lop the bolts so they are flush on the nutted side and put a plug of weld on the end, filling the clearance hole and leaving a raised disc fused onto the strip and the bolt, effectively rivetting the assembly together. Strong enough? definitely. Dismantleable? No way.

Looks good as well.

My welder is more than up to the job, but my customer is 20 miles away and has a cheapo nasty SIP welder that I doubt is up to the job.

When we are finished I will put up a post of the end result. The next job is making the top and then welding the bolts up.

love your work mate,,if i lived nearer i would be more than happy/willing to sling "Not Literally" my clarke 151te in back of the van for you to use till the job is sorted,,this baby as just welded decent thicknesses of steel,,ive had it 5 year buddy bought it second hand £115 brilliant machine,i was only saying last night to my wife if out of all the tool/gear ive got the mig is the most valuable to my heart in the sense of how ruddy handy it is

This did work.



More info in a day or so.
We dragged the welder over, the wind dropped and worked like a loony, made a gas shroud to keep the air out, turned the gas output up. Got it donw in an afternoon. The guy I made it for kept disappearing and came back with a hint of whisky fume about him. emotional stuff.
