Even it means giving a drink to the local garage i'd check it before replacing. Don't know about the w202 c class but i spent a fair bit of time trawling merc forums last year finding the common weak points of w124 e class models. Failure of crank sensors (not rare but they're not known for eating them either) appeared to be intermittant on these- cutting out when hot rather than sudden total failure.

and can you hear the fuel pump working when the sensor is working ok?
as i had a little play and when i was passing steel over the sensor i could hear nothing or even get a spark out of it

Could try the Merc club UK forum, there's knowledgeable folks there and poss info already waiting on a search. Also there's at least one big US one I joined, very busy but their models are a bit different to ours, still v.useful though.
Chap on the UK one sells parts to forum members with a discount. I also used Euro Car Parts for some bits.
Have you checked the coil? (assuming it's not fancy coil-on-lead type). If you got a Haynes for pretty much any single-coil car the resistances will give a good-enough-ish guide, and the method using the meter.

most fuel pumps just pressurise the system when you first turn on the ignition and then nothing until the car is running.
be aware that its not guaranteed to be the pickup coil could be ht coil, or management system if you have no joy get a mobile tuner to run diagnostics on it usually from £25 to £35 they can tell you exactly what has failed

If the fuel pump is working, you should hear it working for a few seconds when you turn the key to position 2(all dashboard lights lit up).
If there is no spark, then check the coil, crank sensor, ecu.
Merc use a special round 38 pin diagnostic plug.
