Will I be able to use this small induction motor?

I felt that this 240v 45w motor could possibly be utilised as a pond pump in an enclosureand located away from the water used to turn a thin shaft of some sort.

There are two lots of wires coming from the motor as can be seen in the photos. Nothing in the standard colours of live & netural.

There was also a 1 micro farad cap located away from the motor secreted within the multiple wiring.

It has me foxed unless a knowledgeable member can advise me.

This motor looks like the type used for fans, and might be shaded pole, in which case no capacitor is required, except for power factor correction. The various wires may be used to select different speeds. Side view pics might help.

I will post a side view. It did come from a verticle type fan. There was a 1 micro farad cap within the wiring.

Just buy an eBay submersible pump, they're cheap enough to be 'disposable'. That'll leave you more time for the next project....

What do you think, do you know if there is a way for me to test it? I basically need to know which of the wires to use.

There appears to be a groove in the side of the laminations, going away from the camera. Is that correct? If so, is there a thickish copper wire loop sitting in the groove?

If I am looking at the same thing, there is like a line of rust Here is a close up.

I can take both ends off and take some photos showing great detail?

Heh, heh, I know the feeling. Well, it doesn't look like a shaded pole motor, after all that, so will probably require a capacitor to provide the phase difference between poles, to get it turning.

Try measuring the resistance between all of the wire combinations. There should be 10 of them. Call the two blue wires blue1 and blue2.

Also check resistance between wires and metalwork, to make sure there is no leakage.

From the pics, the groove in the laminations looks like a groove for a screw.

What are the results of the resistance measurements? The combinations for measurement should be:

blue1 to blue2
blue1 to grey
blue1 to black
blue1 to orange
blue2 to grey
blue2 to black
blue2 to orange
grey to black
grey to orange
black to orange
