Will a generic flex shaft work with my cordless drill?

I'm looking at doing some precision drilling/grinding and I need a dremel type tool that I can use with accuracy. Not wanting to spend money on something I'll seldom use, I thought perhaps a flexible shaft attachment may work. Thoughts?

It will work, but a cordless drill is only going to run at 1600 rpm, too slow for most flexible shaft applications. You will have to mount the drill and lock it on, and the unsecured end of the outer sheath is going to flap about.

This Parkside bench grinder comes with a flexible shaft, and runs 0 - 10,000 rpm:

When they are in stock at Lidl they cost about half that price. Aldi has a similar product.

The one to which you link is designed to go onto an actual Dremel. The shaft goes in the collet and the cap screws on the nose of the machine. This might be difficult to use in a standard drill chuck.

Yes I had a feeling that might be the case. I'll look into buying a dremel type tool in that case. What do people recommend?

I’d probably buy an actual Dremel, the entry level ones aren’t expensive. A few months back I got one off Amazon after a tip-off on here, although I still haven’t actually used it!

A couple of people I know have bought the generic cheap ones for very occasional use but the collets were rubbish and they ended up buying a Dremel in the end.

Bosch do a 12v version if you happen to already use that system. The body-only is still twice the price of a mains powered Dremel though.

id buy anything but an actual dremel.

i was doing a very light job total run time about 3 hours in 10 min intervals. i went through 3 dremels before i was finished.

i then ended up with a parkside given to me, id has done 4 of said jobs and is still going strong.

I've managed to borrow a cheapy spinny tool from a friend as of this evening, and a set of 10 carbide burrs is £5 from amazon...
