Will a Bunsen burner work with propane?

Does,nt a gas explosion need a vast amount of air to mix with the gas to enable combustion...so whats all the fuss about lighting the taps then when the air is being used to keep the flame lit for a given amount of gas coming out

Gas has flammability limits, 5-15% gas in air for Natural gas

Too little and it won't light, too much and it may ignite and burn off until it explodes

thats where i was trying to go but you have explained a lot better...so its like trying to burn a house brick with a match really then in the world of risks factors

At my school the usual jape was to set fire to the gas taps.

Yup, did that one many times, once we set the poor lads text book alight as it was too close to the tap when we lit it.

Also used to breath in a good chunk of gas and then blow it out your mouth and light it

Once we found a load of old bunsen burners in that store room, I think from before we switched to north sea gas anyway the jetting was different and you got a yellow flame 2-3 foot tall

Fill with gas and cover both holes as you run outside and put it on a couple of bricks, so the bottom hole isn't covered

Quickly light the gas at the top hole, hopefully you should get a nice small flame

Retire to a safe distance and watch, the flame will get shorter and finally disappear, then the tin will explode, hopefully not causing any damage

yep equal air and gas and bang using a treacle tin

The hose in question hasn't had a flashback go up it has it ?

I had a flashback on the oxy/acetylene set we have at work that only had flashback arrestors at the bottles, the oxy hose ended up blocked in parts yet the acetylene hose was fine (I use it as Low Pressure airline now when spraying)

Suffice to say we replaced both hoses and now have flashbacks both at the torch and at the bottles.

I don't think they ever have but I didn't get them new.Anyway, I think a clever bit of latheing to connect the hose to a pressure washer will clear it.

there flashback arrestors at the regulators and are hose check valves at the torch to stop the gas and oxygen mixing in the pipes

Chemistry was my favourite subject. Put the end of the Bunsen pipe (minus bunsen) into a sink (handily located about 6" away) full of water and fairy liquid. Ignite after the bubbles have made a bid for freedom but before they've splodged onto the ceiling tiles. That's kind of fun for a while but really pretty tame, the flame burns quite slowly and not all that hot.

When you try the Bunsen, you should be able to see if it needs more air or fuel with a bit of playing. Presumably it should need more air, I which case, you might be able to doctor the base of the Bunsen by drilling another air hole and enlargening until you get a satisfactory flame. Or, narrowing the jet. If it needs more fuel, bigger jet.

We also had "doctored" Bunsen's at school that had the jets opened up a touch, (precision machined with a compass). Amidst the hormone fug of secondary school, who's flame is biggest seemed to be quite important.
