wifi range extenders

anyone have any experience of them ?
l cant get my laptop to find the net work, there is free wifi 300m away with a line of conifers in the way,
if l walk over to the source then it works fine but not where l am pitched up, l need something that will reach the 300m then re send around the van, l did a search but there were so many things on the market it was as clear as mud !, can someone recommend one ?

I been using a range extender here for some time. I needed it get internet access for my laptop in my workshop -the hub is some distance away. My range extender came from Maplin, it just needed some basic configuration (which wireless network to hook up to incuding the key) and plugging in to the mains. Is there somewhere "inside" like shed where you could put the range extender? obviously it needs to see a good signal in order to re-transmit it.
