Is there not some danger in running cat5 between buildings? I can't remember what the potential issue was other than it being something to do with imbalanced earths in the two buildings getting tethered by the ethernet cable.

Or I may be imagining it - not the first time

Only for shielded cable which shouldn't be used for building interconnects for that reason.

It can be an issue in industry but normally in domestic situations the earth is at the same potential via the combined earth in the supply cable. Gets more complicated if each building has its own earth rod fitted. (over head rural supplies)

Most domestic network ip stuff is all plastic boxes fed from isolated elv supplies so little issue.

Depending on how much you want to spend and the distance from the house to the shed you could look at Point to Point wireless links or you might get away with an external access point mounted to the house.

I was asked to put in some wall lights by a local guy. Not unusually here half his house was the other side of an alley on a spur from the main wiring. So, the bathroom, containing a washing machine and dryer within one step of the shower, had no earth at all. Ditto the kitchen. All on 1.5 cable needless to say. Another guy had his microwave plugged into an overhead light 'cos he was short of sockets.......the insulation was hanging off the wiring in brown shreds.
