WIFI extender question.

In terms of getting WiFi over distance, it can be done. My office internet is fed over WiFi from another building over 7 miles away and we have a 100Mb connection at that distance. It's a point to point link rather than an omni directional antenna but all the kit is out there and usually not expensive. A big part of my job is WiFi systems and as well as long range open air stuff we do difficult to cover buildings too. For example getting 100% coverage of a 7 storey town house with crazy thick internal walls.

You'll be able to do what you want to do with it. Might take a little careful thought and planning but should be perfectly achievable.

Not a new business - that's the beauty of it, it's older than yours my dear fellow. I've just got to use my inside voice and not scare away the existing work

Plus, I get to charge stupid rates for not very much because we use secret languages that no-one else knows (electronics)

I just can't get it to lock! Really annoying because I have a really good Zen internet connection at the shop and have to rely on 4GEE at home with a capped contract that has run out again, thanks to 'indoors streaming her paranormal nonsense constantly. They are Ubiquiti 500mm with a potential range of 25 miles, mounted on 20' masts at the gable end. Bringing the two units to the same location and they lock instantly so I know that they work.

We use Ubiquiti for almost all of our Wifi stuff. We've had a couple of variants for the office link, but my business partner did the install of it so i'm not sure what models we've used. I'll ask him tomorrow. We had a real basic set to begin with and it worked just fine. Then we moved office and the distance increased but also the terrain wasn't quite as perfect.

We now relay it through an intermediate transceiver in a farmers field. This is solar and wind powered to keep it going. Works a treat and has been running for nearly a year now without a single dropout.

Are you using Ubiquiti's own terrain survey software?

That looks interesting but it says it puts out signal at 23 degrees , it would be better in this place if the whole yard could pick up on the signal. 360 degrees of signal would be ideal but if impossible two of the above would do the office which is more important.

Sorry, I misinterpreted your requirement as one of linking two buildings across a yard. The equipment I suggested is intended as a point-to-point link.

I'm typing this from the end of a 5.8GHz link, the other station is ca. 20km away. It's powered by PV and windgen to lead acid batteries, and links back to a fibre connection adding another 6km to the overall link distance. Using a mix of Mikrotik and Ubiquiti, it has been up an running for more than 10 years now. The gear will need replacing/updating soon, I think, but it has been ultra reliable except for the occasions where the batteries gave up the ghost (the weakest link).
