This may have been covered previously in the thread but can someone explain exactly why emery paper is so dangerous?
If a strip of emery paper is held in a loop around the workpiece and held in the 1st finger and thumb of each hand (1 end per hand) then would the emery paper not just get ripped out of your hand? What is it that drags people into the machine?

Its when the emery gets wrapped around the rotating part then gets wrapped around fingers or hands
Machines usually have high torque so just keep going
The human always comes off second best, if your lucky
When it goes wrong its very quick

My first ever industrial accident nearly 50 years ago was a tangle with a triple spindle pillar drill, we had all three spindles running, pilot, drill, then ream, and just move the job between them, swarf was beating me up so the foreman gave me some pvc handling gloves to wear, 16 years old and I didn't know any better.
As I moved the job between spindles the point of a 17mm drill caught the back of the glove and wound me up in the drill, by the time I managed to stop it using my other hand I was well and truly trapped, result was a dislocated finger on my left hand and a nasty cut where the drill went in, I still wear that scar today, I can also remember the pop that my finger made when the casualty doctor put it back in joint.
I reckon another turn of the drill would have cost me my finger, I remember the chap that released me and took the glove off saying that he fully expected my finger to be loose in the glove.

Ive seen details of a range of different degloving and scalping accidents involving an assortment of machines.
One of the worst involved a chocolate tempering machine. Operator went to wipe the rim of the bowl to remove build up of product. His rag got tangled up on the stirrer, then his finger. It pulled off his finger along with about 1m of tendon from his arm

Years ago when I was in my teens, my father bought a Petter engine from the auction at Honiton Hill Rally.
Got it home, put on a pallet and fired it up. It started getting faster and faster and in no time was flat out RPM's, so cut the diesel supply off.
Then adjusted the speed governor the other way for low revs, fired up again but still no different, was still going full whack,
He tried adjusting the governor but the engine was 'walking' and turning on the pallet due to the vibrations from the rev's, so stopped a second time.
Re-centred on the pallet and he wanted me to hold the engine on third fire up to stop it moving on the pallet by myself holding the cylinder head, legs astride the crankshaft, so he could adjust when running...
Fired up a 3rd time, father adjusting the governor, meanwhile the engine trying to rotate and move on the pallet and me trying to hold it still.
Next thing I knew was my leg was pulled in by my trousers, followed by me standing there only a second later with no trousers on - all happened so fast.
Also, it hadn't been spotted that there was a pulley bolt in the side of the crankshaft sticking out by about 1.5" (I think from memory)
My right trouser leg was grabbed by this fast rotating bolt on the crankshaft, and luckily my trousers went before my leg - the engine wouldn't have stopped for me so it was one or the other, whichever gave first.
I had a bunch of keys in my pocket which got pulled so tightly around the crankshaft that it bent the keys and pulled all of the keyrings apart, and flung all of the keys into the air, along with the shreds of my trousers.
I got away with a friction burned skin on my leg from the crankshaft.
I was extremely lucky that my trousers tore off and I was also lucky that when my leg got pulled in it had missed the rotating bolt.
I think he still has that Petter engine to this day, but I can't say that I am fond of it!

In my teens I pulled a 1/4 hp induction motor out of an old scrap washing machine. Quite pleased with myself that I'd got it running on the bench, 1/4 hp didn't sound like much so I thought I'd see if I could stall it with a bicycle inner tube wrapped round the shaft.
It turned out that (a) no I couldn't, and (b) having your thumb forcibly bent the wrong way really hurts.

That's a noise and feeling you never ever forget,
Seen a few, including sons of employees, who can't see the benefits of actually putting effort in - a decent, well paid, career opportunity and they chuck it in . . . some of them I think would do the same wherever, and whoever, they were working for. Some people just seem unable to motivate themselves unfortunately.
When i worked down Leigh Old town there was an elderly dog with no tail just a big bald area with ringpiece like a baboon. It was in the habit of folowing its owner everywhere including down the engine room. In the Trawler race the hound caught its tail in the prop shaft coupling....

There is absolutely nothing quite so ingenious as a congenital idiot! Even when you are standing over them on a 1 to 1 basis they will still do the oposite to what they have been told.
