Welding up a rotten Transit seems to me as much fun as spending a wet night in an open grave with maggie thatcher...........
Lol.................There is actually a very busy Transit forum where there are interminable threads showing rotten old wrecks being "repaired"...............
All this talk of old trannys, I thought I'd ended up on a navy forum again...

i have a feeling a lot of the people posting here are metalworkers / welders by trade so i can see why you wouldnt be keen to weld your own rusty tranny. me though i miss the motor industry. it would be a nice change to get all black and snotty again. i have seen some of the "repairs" on the tranny forum, am not going to pay a bloke a small fortune to keep patching things when i can learn a new skill and do the job properly. def not going to unbox and get my grinder out. much practice first.

I ran rotten old Transits for years, and every year at MOT time had increasingly large amounts of welding to do. Looking back at it now, can see what a complete waste of time it all was, as had I owned a Hiace back then, there would have been no need for welding, better fuel consumption, more comfort, and of course bulletproof reliability.
Its difficult/impossible to repair a Transit properly, unless you are willing to buy new parts, or go to scrap yards and search high and low for non rusty parts which you can cut out of scrappers, and use to repair yours. Otherwise patching a la Transit Forum is the order of the day, and is something which tends to accelerate rotting in adjacent areas, as its invariably done in the way shown on the TF.
Welding rotten old vans year after year seems to me a fools errand, at least from y own personal experience, and would suggest to anyone with a Transit to get rid and buy something better, which does the job without turning to iron oxide at a rapid rate of knots............

Too right.
It's not a job I would particularly enjoy to do as yes I've spent a large proportion of my life plating rusty sils, chassis, arches etc but I'd be even more ashamed to line someone else's pockets if I'm capable of doing it myself.
I used to own a cavalier many years ago which I patched up for every test. It wasn't fun but I bodged the old girl through every year.

to be honest my next van isnt going to be a cheap one, i am not going to be jumping from knacker to bucket to nail to lemon. a couple of years is all i am after. racing is a massive part of my life and it was a quick fix to get me going. i know when to stop. but compared to other utter rust buckets out there mine is really good for its age. a couple years, a few quid and i think ill get a vito because not a single one has ever been known to rust
