I find that the worst messers about'ers when selling stuff are ....
Irish traveller, want everything for nothing , after the 40 mimute sob story you may end up paying them to take your goods away. In any case they will come back later and take everything else anyway.
African, never turn up to collect, then phone you a month later saying they are coming on the bus to collect the cement mixer.
Pakistani, start bartering when they turn up after they've already agreed the price, you may loose the will to live after your Transit van is only apparently worth 12 p.
Nigerian, just garentees an convoluted and far fetched scam that will empty your account, pass the deeds of your house to a ltd company in Lagos , and possibly sell your family to slave traffickers .

I've sold 3 cars in the past year on eBay. No, I'm not a trader; I just get through a lot of cars - often 3 or 4 at a time.
The first one sold 3 times without anyone coming to pay and/or collect. The fourth buyer then phoned to say he had no money, but would I take another car as payment? In desperation I agreed and then put it straight back on eBay. That one 'sold' twice with the same results until I finally sold it through another site. In the meantime I was contacted by someone in Northern Ireland who was willing to pay the full price and was sending a courier to collect and pay for it. I PM'd him back, via eBay, that with so many fake bank/building society cheques in circulation I would only accept cash. For some reason he stopped corresponding ...
After advertising costs I made £200 over the selling price of the first car. Then my main car was stolen with over £1,000 of new components invested in it along with an unused band saw, motor home awning, a set of 4 wheels & tyres (215/70 X 17.5) for my motor home and nearly all my new hand tools. So I bought an MG ZR with a couple of months of MOT and running on only 3 cylinders at auction and ran it until I could get my Rover convertible back on the road. I then put it on eBay and had 2 'buyers' back out and the third arrived and tried to haggle the price down to half his winning bid. Finally sold it for a loss of £100, but by the my Rover was fixed and running sweetly. At least it kept me fully mobile for 3 months for a lot less money than taxis.
Of course the Rover ate the new cambelt within a month/300 miles and I was reduced to using public transport until the garage fixed it FOC. Can't fault him as he didn't supply the belt and had it fixed in a couple of days!
Next I put my twin axle car transporter trailer up for auction. It stands me at over £500 and one no better sold just 'down the road' for £750. It topped out at £330 so I declined to sell it. The buyer went ballistic and promised to have me blackballed on eBay. Doesn't work that way, chum. Still got it, but now it's on Gumtree and Preloved. I'd take a small drop on it as I want to get my best car back home so that I can finish all the small jobs I started Oh, so long ago, but haven't got the off road parking except for where the trailer is parked. Unfortunately all the offers have been stupidly low except for one 'female petroleum engineer' (allegedly) working on an offshore drilling rig. She was happy with the price and was sending a courier. Not heard from 'her' since I mentioned my cash only policy ...

I did have one offer of "£500 cash and I'll collect it today" on the day I listed it, good job I didn't take him up on his "generous" offer as it went for more than double

Don't sell any plant or equipment on ebay without immediate payment via PayPal. I've already had two Nigerians turn up for a £500 generator that agreed to pay cash, but then started a well rehearsed speil about a bank transfer from the laptop they bought with them. Its not worth the hassle.

I sold an item on the bay about a year ago, the buyer didnt contact me at all, I ended up saying if he didnt responds asap then I would have no option but to open a case against him. He paid for the item in full without making any contact again, I messaged him to say it was here to collect whenever he wanted, so far I have heard nothing, The item is say by the front door as it has been for the last year... It was only £45 but thats a fair chunk of money to just walk away from. some people are really strange....

My story is of a BT box trailer on Ebay. It was on for £600 and I offered £550 and was accepted. Arrangements were made to collect it two days later from Witney, about 40 miles away. Destination was a kitchen showroom. When I got there, no sign of the trailer. Went in to find that he had left his minion to tell me it was no longer there. Got on the phone to him and he claimed that he didn't expect me to turn up. This despite my insistence that I sent him a deposit, which he refused, saying my word was good enough!

Sold an item on Ebay, stated in the ad three times personal collection only , someone from Ireland bought and wanted his mate to collect it, Fair enough but could not give me a time a day or any indication when it would be and expected me to open up my business workshop when it suited him. He was annoyed when I refunded his money and he left me negative feedback, my first in over 1000 transactions . I contacted Ebay about his demands and they agreed about giving him a refund but they would still not change the feedback

After a couple of weeks on Gumtree the trailer is (*fingers crossed*) sold. The buyer is allegedly from Southampton, but visiting family in the Midlands. He's due in an hour or so with cash-in-hand for it. He might even buy the electric winch! I'm in two minds about the winch as I've just bought a small Peugeot 100cc scooter which could be hung on the back of my motor home. Although not essential the winch would make getting it up there much easier on my crumbling spine.
I don't use PayPal for such sales as I consider that most eBay fees are already over the top; especially the Final Value Fee!

The large company even though saying in the listing several in stock guess what never had the item in stock at all!!!
Happened twice recently, phone calls to them we are still waiting for it from the supplier in blah blah.
Now I realise a company can't stock everything for instance from a large tool manufacturer for instance but Ebay is not the place then to advertise items that you don't even have in stock.

Had years of no problems on Ebay and then in the last month had 3 non payers when I was selling, a psycho stalker who seemed to think I would help him fit the parts he bought and 2 big sellers who never dispatched my items.
It annoys me that as a seller you can no longer leave poor feedback for the oxygen thieves that muck you about.

Oxygen thieves...oh yes, been pointing them out to my kids for years. My youngest daughter is most adept at spotting them now.
My ebay tale of woe was brought about by me wanting to sell a load of computer gear, primarily a BBC 'B' computer, disk drive, extra RAM, ROMs etc, plus a job lot of BBC & 6502 CPU books, a load of odds and sods, etc.
Stated clearly in the list "COLLECTION ONLY" and, like many other posters here, the 'winning' idiot was 220 miles away and emailed me asking about postage.
Politely told him to shove it and I would re-post the stuff but he pleaded (he was a miserable pleader) and 'offered' to arrange a courier pickup.
Pickup day came and went with no sign of courier van.
Got on the phone, of course it's all the courier's fault and he'd arrange another.
New courier turned up late but took the box I'd packed it all in, with the courier's own printed address labels stuck on in three places.
Next thing, Plonker is emailing me effectively telling me that I'd stitched him up and the stuff was never received. Grrr...
Took it up with ebay and after a couple of weeks of emails to and fro, Plonker was defeated - I got my money and he claimed he received nothing. Yeah, right. More like he wanted the gear and not pay for it.
Needless to say, will NEVER do that again.

In the past eBay rules stated that you could only sell items that you actually had in stock under the laws of 'distance selling'. However 'drop shipping' has put an end to this. If you don't know, this is a way of reselling something you don't own, but can buy by proxy and the item is then sent direct from the wholesaler without you ever seeing it. An invoice is generated with your details as though you shipped it.
placing a card for what you have for sale in the local supermarkets works quite well, at least the buyer has a good chance of being local so no p&p, and being local they can view before buying if they want, ebay is great for catching a big audience but most of the interested buyers live miles away so p&p has to come into play and that when the problems come into play, more so with the big stuff, a couple of years back i was doing a few jobs to see if it was worth doing at all from a couple of transport auction sites where ebayers had won large or heavy items on the bay then had the problem of getting it to them, i did a fair few jobs from furniture/white goods through to motor bike/ car transporting, i am sure that ebay is a drug of some kind to a lot of people and they must have their daily intake of buying stuff they dont need, usual comment`s when i was delivering what ever it was i picked up was " oh eck its bigger than i thought it would be" or " i wondered what it would look like" also, some sellers are so trusting that they go past the point of stupidity even to a point where as one guy who i was collecting a motor bike from saw a van pull up (me) came over and said i`m mr xxxxxx and then give me, the keys, the mot cert, and reg doc, then he said sorry i car`nt help you load it lads but i`ve got to go and fetch the missus from the hair wrecker (sorry dresser) i`m late as it is, the bike is round the back of the house, then got into his car on the drive and drove off, i looked at my mate and we both just shuck our heads, the problem with all this was, he did`nt book me, the buyer did by a bid, he did`nt know who i was nor did he even bother to get a receipt or take the reg of van, or ask for id or paperwork, just assumed i was the man picking the bike up. The buyer is just as bad, all he had was a telephone number and a date the bike would be delivered on

Here's a good one...... I've bought and sold loads on EBAY without too much hassle over the years. A few weeks ago my missus asked me to order a new hot brush for her...she texted me the EBAY link...£16.00 inc. postage...allow up to 5 days..for delivery so I ordered it.
Two days later I get a parcel from Amazon...this contained a hot brush sent 'as a gift' from some guy I'd never heard of. I rang Amazon but they said they were not allowed to say who the sender was but they could send a 'thank you' if I wanted. I checked the hot brush on Amazon....£13.50 inc postage. The EBAY brush never arrived of course so I presume this guy is selling items from Amazon on EBAY and then making a few quid each time without having to hold any stocks!!
