i made a little bending tool earlier to try and straighten out half a gas bottle i cut so i could get arealtively flat sheet for my welding table idea...
the tool is just a length of 20x20x3 shs about 1.2M long with 2 short length of the same box welded on in an 'F' shape at the end, idea was i put the steel t be straightened in the gap and used the length of the bar to lever it around until it was flat enough to get on it with a BFH
in short, one of the bits of box snapped off...it was welded on 3 sides with a 2.5mm 6013 at 80ish amps and granted there is a small crater at the end of one of the butt welds, i didnt think that would be enough to cause a total failure for this application...
all 3 welds have broken right along the length of the welds, and it is the weld broken not the parent metal, the toes of the weld are still on each piece of parent material...from looking at it it looks as if the weld is in there as deep as can be expected and no obvious signs to me as to why it broke apart from maybe i was just expecting too much of the welds..
the piece that has broken off was on top on the outside of the curve and i was pushing the bar away from me so there was a lot of twisting force in play, the broken bit would have been forced backwards and upwards towards me (and i was really bouncing on it too). the only part of the joint that wasnt welded is the fillet on the inside, the same as the remaining piece (which has also bent away from square as you can probably see)
i havent got any heavier material to remake this part but should have enough of this to make another similar and maybe use a 3.2 rod and weld all 4 side this time?
