Ditched Adobe eons ago and been using Foxit. Much better. Only downside was that i couldn't view pdfs directly in Firefox by opening a new tab etc. Fixed that with an add on and all was good. All of a sudden it's changed (black background, half the tools are missing and everything's moved) and i get a slow loading pdf that keeps crashing like Adobe's POS. Foxit reader hasn't updated itself since middle of Jan so it's not that. All i can think of is that it got added when Firefox updated today (pdf.js according to google) except i can't find out how to disable it and Foxit is still selected under options anyway.

After ripping out what's left of my hair i've fixed it. Tools - options - applications... i was looking for something with Firefox or .js and completely missed 'portable document format (pdf)' Changed that from 'preview in firefox' to 'use foxit reader' (same setting as under foxit reader icon) and it's back to normal.

New version of Firefox has a new inbuilt PDF reader based on JavaScript and HTML5
