Who needs a surface grinder?

Well if you just want a grind finish without the accuracy it's the way to go.

Seems totally pointless to me.

Brightspark it is only going to be worse tolerance than the shaper machine before the junk was added on the end. With all the will in the world a decent shaping machine will not match a decent surface grinding machine and that's before you strap a angle grinder on the shaper.

u obviously dont know how accurate a shaper is .its on par with any decent miller if a decent grinding wheel was fitted on the shaper head it would be no diffrent from using a toolpost grinder on a lathe

I didn't mention mill. I'm talking surface grinders which are in a whole different league. If you think that will do the job of a decent Jones & Shipman surface grinder I give up.

Inherent problem with shapers is they will always cut at a angle. This may be absolutely tiny on the best shapers but never the less is true.

Mill's on a side note. The basic manual Bridgeport a new one is pretty well the same as they were years ago. Go on to a top quality VMC and boy they are miles ahead of what they were years ago.

i didnt say it would be as acurate as a jones and shipman surface grinder. and ive had a fair bit of experience using one of those as well as the shaper and manual bridgeport . it depends on what accuracy u are striving for . im quite happy with what i have

We were talking about surface grinders so when we are comparing it will be a surface grinder. That set up is supposedly a surface grinder so lets compare it to a surface grinder.

The comparison of ability is poor at best. It doesn't do the job of a true surface grinder.

What the point of it is beyond me.

Too much assuming goes on around here, without knowing the why and wherefores. Has anyone any idea why they stuck a grinder on a shaper?

well he has taken the clapper box off the shaper and made a decent mount for the grinder its not so called bodged on . its just the same as mounting a dremmel on a piece of metal with jubily clips and clamping it on your toolpost verry accurate in deed even though its crude

It's a angle grinder with very little in the way of precision mechanically. The disc will flex and vary it's pressure across the work piece. There is no cooling so limits it to thick stuff.

Well, maybe an angle grinder isn't that accurate but I see no reason why a better grinding spindle wouldn't be a good idea on a shaper.

I agree that's pretty inaccurate due to the limitations of the grinder, and I've no idea why one would subject a shaper and any nearby machines to that dust...having said that a mate reground a flywheel in his lathe using much the same setup!

As to the accuracy of a shaper, out of interest I measured the resurfaced jaws all over and was surprised how good they are, don't really trust my micrometer 'feel' so took them to a mate (retired tool maker) for him to check, confirmed variation is 3 tenths..0.0003"!

I didn't post that in the other thread as I would get a bit bored by the naysayers input...In softer steel I would now expect perfection to be possible.

There's an old pro machinist on another forum who has made a lapping attachment for his shaper and gets excellent results with easily contained paste so no dust.

Given my amateur attempts can be that good I would expect a pro to get better and if that could be finished of by lapping there should be no real need to attempt grinding at all.
