Who are our Fusion experts now.?

I have been trying to get my head round fusion 360 again and to be fair I can sort of create a few things if everything goes smoothly and I can also follow a YouTube tutorial but if anything does not work as expected I struggle.
I have created a pot with a screw lid on it and at 20% full size for the pot and 19% for the lid it fits nicely.
But I have two issues.
1.i can't get my head round whether 100% on the pot and 99% would fit or do I need to try more like 100% on the pot and 95% on the lid?

2.i would like to reduce the height of the pot. However when I do that I loose the thread...and then I can't recreate the thread lower down.

If they both fit nicely now then you need to scale both by the same amount, so if you increase the pot by 100% increase the lid by 100% as well.

Basically once you have sized them by 20% and 19% and got them to match, job done. forget about it.
They can now be considered 2 objects the correct size. So 100% size each.
If you want to make them bigger or smaller now then scale both together.

I scaled them in Cura so I am not entirely sure if I reload the STL I can rescale.

You are not the only one mate.
I spent an hour installing it onto yet another laptop the other week to try and sort a lock/lag issue i get with it. Made no difference but when i was testing it out i was sketching something, mirrored a section of it which ended up leaving me a gap in the sketch and it then took me 40mins to figure out just how to select and move it!

I get on ok with it if I use it 3 or 4 nights a week but if I go for a few weeks without using it I seem to forget every command. Not sure why as I can remember sketchup/qcad/etc without using them for months

Yeah you can’t make the part shorter and have everything update unless you’ve drawn the part as a parametric drawing with a timeline.

I am not so much upset that I can't do that BUT with the fact after reducing the height I can not add a thread in the top...

I get speed if I reduce the bloat in Windows...it was insanely quick then.


I know what you mean I have what I think are two models on that page it seems they are linked as I have to save then to another file to be able to manipulate them.

I have never used fusion but could you follow hotponyshoes' advice and save two copies of the part. Lop the bottom off one and save as top_POT. Lop the top off the other and save as bot_POT. Bring both files back into a new drawing and join them together. This assumes the sides are parallel.

Someone should make a set of icons for the commands in these programs that more closely resemble real life tools. Light sabre and welder in this case.

Well I will be trying this later but lopping and joining does not go smoothly for me. Lol

Are you modelling this with a view to 3D printing?

Fusion is so powerful it can become confusing if you don't follow a structured modelling route. This is how I'd go about it:

Create some user parameters for dimensions that need to change...

Next the simple sketch...

Extrude the bolt (note that user parameters have been used and also added 2mm (could have been a user parameter) for the bolt 'head'...

Next extrude the nut again user parameters are used...

Note the nut and bolt overlap so a 'combine' can be used to cut the nut from the bolt (these could have been extruded separately, doing it this way opens more options though)

The Fusion threadforming gives standard clearance (class 6g in this case)...

If that isn't enough then use offset faces to 'shrink' the bolt...

wow thanks for taking the time to document that. Tonight I have been out celebrating 20 years since my wife survived her stroke (although its really friday November 6th at 10.45) lockdown forced me to pull the meal forward and I am really not sure Guiness and Fusion 360 will go together. lol

Anyhow I have the steps saved and will crack on with following them sometime tommorow!
