problem with old/used engine oil is that it can also induce corrosion from the nasties it contains. maybe fresh oil but never used if utilising it asa preservative.
It is one of the things we do, if we are laying something up for an extended period or even just the winter, it is done with fresh oil.

Yes, One of the largest oil undercoating places nearby switched years ago to clean oil.
Not motor oil, they use hydraulic oil (non detergent).

If your white spirit is what's known over here (in old times ) as "white gas"
it is much more easily to catch light than diesel, or kero.

If in fact it is white gas or Coleman fuel, it should flash off pretty quickly after spraying.

No ours is totally different. Much less volatile than petrol/gas as you yanks call it. What do you call gas anyway

Gasolene.
White gas or coleman fuel is simply pump/car gas without any additives.
30 octane is the number I have heard.
So it flashes off quick with no residue nor much smell.

I know - I have used it several times in lamps and pressure stoves. Nice but expensive.

This isnt anything regarding your post, but i specifically do not want the thinner to flash off quickly. I want it to stay about for a while to encorage creeping.

I feel that kerosene will probably do me better than white spirit in that respect.

My chemical supplier for my undercoating suggested Acetone !
As it would flash off so quick the material would not drip off.
(and I would probably melt every piece of plastic, including wiring insulation)

I use White gas, but my formula has 2 components, one stays wet
under a skin of the second part, to creep for months.
No/minimal dripping, dry to touch so as not to attract dirt.
Push harder, will slide under your finger.

Kerosene will be fine , with or without the lanolin .
Lanolin is slippeyer than snot but better for your skin !

I've got a couple of yoghurt pots of white spirit in the workshop that have been sat open for a few months and they're still mostly there.

It will evaporate, but it's not anything like brake cleaner.
