Which wood preserver?

There was a thread on it only the other day, but i cant find it now.

The cuprinol 5-star stuff has now gone water based (dont know if that makes any difference really) and also requires a re-mortgage to buy a tin (close on 50 quid a tin - im sure the last ones i bought were £17 and i thought that was bad enough!)

There's a sika one too. The COSHH sheet says its got most of the same in it, but some changes. That ones about £30 a tin.

Or, for £20 a tin, you can get a sika one thats rot only, not woodworm. Woodworm stuff you can get cheap anyway, but its probably not worth having to paint twice to save a tenner.

Anyway, whats the one to buy? Doing old roof timbers before i wedge cellotex between them and plaster board them, so ill never be able to get to them again.

I always use Ronseal Total on new windows and doors as it's the only one I have found that hasn't gone over to water based.

as above then waterbased is a total waste of time for any coating

Old-school creosote is good value and easily available, if you like the smell

water based is fine if you can get hold of it, its all timber treatment pro's have used for the last 20 years

Not seen solvent based used in existing structures this century
