which welding preparation option will be strongest

Hi,
I'm looking to weld a 50x200x12mm plate onto a 25mm round bar
as far a I can see there are 2 options
A. slot the end of the bar and weld the plate in,or
B. cut the plate and weld the bar in the slot

I'm open to any other ideas

My opinion is slot the bar, gives more of a locking fit.

It depends on orientation - is this joined like a lollipop & stick? If so, can the bar continue up into the plate or must it stop at the edge of the plate.

Best way is to drill 25mm hole through plate, cut a 45 angle on the end of bar, insert bar through plate then weld top and bottom.

Cut a slot in the plate.

If you slot the round, with a 12mm wide slot, there wont be much meat left.

Slot the plate. Where the round meets the plate will leave a nice prep on all sides to weld up.

whichever way:.......a fully fused joint is always stronger. Welds around a circular are a crack test so be careful but the severity depends on the materilas and the size

I can't offer advice on what's best but I'll tell you what's easiest, a slot in the plate!

Without a milling machine is there a clever way to get a 12mm slot in bar stock?

I'd do whichever was easiest depending on the application, slotting the plate would be my option for strength.

Slotting the plate seems the easier option
and as Hitch pointed out if the bar was slotted
there woldn't be much left to weld too.
