As has been said if you go for a vauxhall vivaro , renault traffic , nissan primastar (same apart from badge ) make sure its had a gearbox change , the merc sprinters are good of cource with only a 2 k budget it will be high milage !
My previous van was a citroen relay was ok until about 120,000 miles , then it soon cost me £2000 in repairs
FWIW, I've just become the happy owner of an LDV Convoy 400. Ten years old, 81K on the clock, one owner from new, (Doncaster Council), and obviously looked after as 'tis spotless inside and out. Ford 2.5turbo diesel, goes well enough for me. A reasonable enough motor if not a little basic. However, as my last motor was a seriously luxurious coachbuilt motorhome, 2.8tdi and all the bells and whistles, most things will be basic by comparison . But best of all, it's British , none of this damned Johnny Foreigner tripe, I thank you.
Only problem to date is having to buy a spare wheel. Apparently, Donny Council spec all their vehicles without a spare, they don't want the poor dears having an accident while changing a flatter. HSE policy, doncher know ( where's the "I've never heard such b******s" smilie when you need it )
depends how your going to use it i work as a self employed builder had loads of transits yes they rust but you can go out every day in the worst of wether and it will start parts are cheap. dont go for new shape with gearbox probs also fuel pump probs if you want smal van escort is good is good engine wise
