which tires

its a minefield for prices and types I'm after some 185.60. 15 tires for my van a 1700 combo diesel . I want reinforced and good grip in the wet and need the price . any ideas branded makes only

I've just had some Nexen fitted the rear if my van and they seem ok, company paid so I don't know how much. They'll be cheap enough though.
Also just put a pair of Barham tyres on the Zafira and I'm waiting on some for the rear too. Seem pretty good and 2 for the price of 1 at National Tyres.
I WON'T pee money away on Michelin, Pirelli etc anymore due to the crap state of the roads in Hertfordshire now, I've had two tyres destroyed by pot holes and have just had to replace all the alloy wheels!
If I were you I'd try some of the cheaper makes as unless you're racing that van it won't make much difference.

I agree there,find a better deal from the local breakers or again ebay,no way am i spending a fortune on rubber just for a MK5 tranny

i t realy gets hammered and I push it to its limits that's why I want reinforced with good grip

Costco usually do good tyre deals (if you're a member). I get Michelin agilis tyres for my vw t4. you have to specify load rated van tyres or some places just give you budget car tyres which aren't really up to it.

I bought 5 brand new Goodyear 175/65/14 tyres on unused MGF steel spare wheels for £20 each from a specialist breaker. They had loads as no demand. Fit perfectly on my Marlin as same PCD

I have a set of Ovation tyres on the Vito they are awfull when the road is a bit damp, the back end is as tail out as my old Escort 1600 Sport was, it was fun provoking the Escort the Vito does it all by itself which is not fun. It is a set of Pirelli or Contis for me before next winter unless someone comes up with a better option here.

bridgestone duravis, excellent mileage, just changed the front pair, as they were down to the limit after 30000km, no complaints, stick well enough, and quiet.


bit skint just now, so went for the cheaper option, "kleber transpro", my god, they're as loud as fark, thought the wheel bearings were gone. I've no idea how they'll stand up for comparison against the bridgestones, but they fair play they were a lot cheaper, but road noise is massive.. will be going for bridgestones again for the rears, when they go (next month or so)...

Have you tried Mytyres.co.uk? They're normally cheapest but you might find a local tyre fitter who will price match.

As for brands, stick to the big names like Pirelli, Dunlop, Bridgestone, Michelin, Continental, etc. Also consider Verdistein, hankook & yokohama as a cheaper tyre but still good quality.
Tyres are one thing I would never begrudge spending money on. There is very little rubber actually in contact with the road so you need to be sure that it's the best you can afford.
Some of these budget brands wear very quickly and in the long run can be more expensive per mile than a decent tyre!

When you say combo, do you mean Vauxhall Combo?? -mine runs 175/65 R14s, but anyway, I run Michelins on it. I have had Bridgestones and Contis. The R versions need to be ordered up, but the Michs are usually in stock, so I went to them.
The roads round here are tight, twisty and bumpy and can get slippry in the wet due to tree sap on the surface.

The Michs grip like youknowwhat, and are quieter than the other brands.

I changed my shockers as well as my van is high mileage. No point in good rubber with shot shocks, I often whip thru some bends sharpish when I have Mr hothatch knobhead on my rear bumper and the plot sticks and tracks well.

Over here, there are summer and winter versions of the tyres. I doubt you get that over there but worth checking maybe.

Summer boots-more durable compound but with decent grip, winter boots are softer compound and warm up quicker, but would wear faster in summer.

Petty sure that's what the van came fitted with when I picked it up. They do seem good. (New shape Transit Courier)
Yes it gets some hammer like you say when some knob in a hot hatch / Audi BMW thinks I'm in the way, usually if I'm in the lanes I don't see them again.....

had vanco on my van, wear rate is good,grip good, as for strength mine are 8 ply rating, dont know enough about yours to state wether it should bbe 6 or 8 ply, dont forget if you should have say 6 ply according to van specs and you uprate to 8 ply the ride will be harsher. Arther

I had new continentals (25.00) on my sierra and Peugeot 405 and 406 all with 185 / 60 / 14 run em summer and winter lasted a while even with my driving my tyres had the 3 rings around the middle and good sweep out of the water from the tyres the car was still heavy but nice big puddles the car did aqua plane
as much as i threw the car around the corners at speed always gripped the rd even to some extent with tire squeal

winter good tyre as well due to the grip as its great fun watching others stuck in snow as i drive passed them with rear wheel drive but i also tyre swapped front wheels for back wheels and visa versa for other cars

The roads here are awful, so for my truck Mazda 2500 4x4 I bought the tyres that my local garage has 205 x16AT some unheard of cheapish make Matador I think ... and they were OK around the village and off road ... but rubbish on the highway and useless in the wet .... if I had to go any distance in the winter I put half a ton of firewood in the back .... Last winter I bought 4 Dunlop Grandtrek ...and the difference is amazing , they grip in the wet and seem good off road .... and they are not much more money €120 each....

do you carry much weight ?

I put 10 ply tyres on all the work vans and it makes a massive difference when you're loaded
(over the standard 8ply)

highest load rating I can see for your size is 94 which is 670kg/tyre

handling is much better with the tougher tyres too, less lean in the corners etc..
