As far as I understand things, no; a water cooled gun needs the water to keep it cool enough, so it doesn't damage itself and doesn't become too hot to handle. If you've got yourself a watercooled gun which works with your machine and you're only short of the cooler, it maybe reasonably simple to build one.
This is correct. You'll burn up a dry watercooled gun in a short amount of time if you try to put any decent current through it - either the cable will melt, or the nozzle will overheat. My money is on the cable, though.
