Have a look at the halfords or machine mart pro stuff.
I've got a Wera one I really like, some quality and the mega-expensive ones
or halfords pro range ? - decent prices and lifetime guarantee
does he use them much, and what does he use them for ? - really need to know his use of them to know what's right for him what's a decent investment etc.

He tinkers with things at the moment but is getting a car soon. It's machinemart ones he has at the moment, never been good from the start. Looked at sealey ones but thought I had seen they werent very good nowadays. Will take a look at the Halfords pro, cheers

He needs to learn to use a knuckle bar/breaker to crack tight nuts off, the ratchet is designed for quickly undoing/doing up fasteners once they are loosened. We all do it, but if something is tight enough to make a ratchet fail, then it wasn't a ratchet job in the first place.

I have Halfords pro, which are fine though I prefer using my Teng ones, a bit dearer but have taken a lot of use without replacing any parts, unlike the Halfordspro.

Yep agree totally but in his defence the ratchets he has were never very good. Always felt cheap and nasty.

Snapon for ratchets, you will have it for the rest of your life. I must have had at least ten free snapon revamps which makes it the cheapest ratchet on the market. The father inlaw gave me a knackered rusty old 1938 3/8" drive snap on ratchet years ago ,I dug it out one day and threw it at the man in the van, no quibble he dated it from the squiggle and just fitted new guts. You cant get better than that

I have for years now a market stall Chinese Snap On copy. Internally it is built like a brick outhouse. Even the Snap On man thought it was Quote "A good Snap On ratchet".

I got a Teng 1/2" ratchet for my 21st birthday, it's still going strong now. I'm 45
Bloody good bit of kit! I've l so got a 1/4" torque wrench that is really nice to use.
Draper pro? I have a 3/8" set and it is also very good.
I got a bargain Beta 1/4" ratchet for £5 at an auto jumble and that seems nice.
Halfords pro range is also good stuff.
You won't go wrong with any of the above.
