Which motor / pulley for Bench Planner

Hi Guys

Recently purchased this bench planner and now trying to spec a motor and

the correct pulley size. I am assuming this will need to run fast but not sure

what would be the best engine spec or pulley size. Appreciate any

advise on this.

Might be worth finding specs on a modern unit with same size cutter etc then working from there.

Ive got a 6" jointer and the drum turns at 4200rpm if that helps.

A quick google shows that planers seem to run at 8000-10,000rpm.
obviously, safe speed depends upon the diameter of the drum!
I'd go for 3000-5000rpm.
That would be something along the lines of a 1:1 ratio for the pulleys, or a 5:3 (5 inch on the motor, 3 on the planer)

Speed/Motor

Planer cutter block-- 3 knife block????, go for 4000 RPM for the block, giving you 12,000 cuts per minute, 3/4Hp or a 1Hp would ever so nice, with the correct electrics, dont just stick an on / off switch on, and seriously consider a guard covering both sides of the cutter block as a matter of extreme urgency. So in front of the fence and behind the fence, the front one a spring loaded one is nice as it covers any part of the block not in use, and when it springs back can be just above the blades. Easy to rig something up, try to attach to the outfeed table as it can be set just above the blades.
The coronet and Myford from the same period is a similar machine and some of the later dated Kity stuff.

are the bearing retaining bolts above the outfeed table height??

ive got a 156mm joiner and it says its 230v 1100w motor and 8000rpm

Thanks for your input guys and the spelling correction that did show up more results on Google. The drum only has two cutters and is 1 3/4 inch diameter and 4 inch in width, so I guess towards 5000 rpm. Only paid £20 for the planer although need to purchase pulleys ,motor and switch so this might turn out to be an expensive toy. The bearing retaining bolts are above the outfeed table height so I guess a guard could be made, secured from one of these bolts.

Try and get hold of an old washing machine - there's plenty of belts and pulleys and motors on them.
You need a NVR (no-volt release) switch with a BIG "off" button, and DEFINITELY a guard - a piece of C channel which slides across to cover the blade might work, and is basically how the guard on my big dewalt/elu works.
I assume you have a table saw? - You might consider driving it from the arbour on that - that will save you the motor and switch costs balanced by the loss of convenience

I would find a 2850rpm motor 3/4 to 1 1/4 hp and step the drive up at 1.5 to 1, that will give 4700rpm at the cutter head, just right for a small machine like that. And guards are a good idea if you want to keep your fingertips!

I have a 2.2kw, 260mm wide unit with two blades. RPM 8,000.
Saw a bench top model in the local B&Q, said 9,000.
