which is best,

static or rotary 3 phase converter?

the college i did the first part of my apprenticeship in used the static type, but it was only ever to run 1 x 350W motor with no load for 20 secs so i haven't really got any idea how good they are

am looking for one as it is a damn site easier to get hold of a 3 phase lathe that does what i want it too.

all the single phase ones, or the converted ones seem to either not cut threads or have a lot of bits missing

saw the 2hp digital one on ebay from drives direct for 199.99 plus a tenner postage.

far cheaper than the rotary and static so at first glance i thought it may be a bit crap.

if the digital ones are better then i will buy one of those when i eventually buy a lathe

There 2 types of digital inverter and it depends on the motor used on the lathe.

3 x 240 volt Delta (the cheap one) or 400/415 volt Star (the expensive one).

or buy a lathe like a Harrison L5(A) and fit a single phase motor....

its probably the delta one I will need, most of the lathes I have seen have delta configured motors on them

There is for sure cheaper ways to do it but the way I did it was easy for me and the lathe just works as it was designed which is what I wanted.

Static is good for one motor / machine, rotary for multiple motors.
I have a rotary working a lift and a saw at the moment and maybe other things in the future!
