Which 40A Plasma?

Yeah that's a newer version of what I had cheap and cheerful, I was very impressed with mine. Having said that I was always prepared for it to die a sudden death as many cheap plasma cutters do. Maybe I got lucky... But IFL stuff is mostly very decent, at least the older TIG stuff was.
Just bear in mind that if you buy the machine with any amount of 12mm cutting in mind, expect to be disappointed. And its a HF start, not blowback.

Most cheap cutters are hf.
You generally get HF or blowback. Pilot arc is a different thing and you can have pilot arc with either starting method.

Is HF start really a problem?

The current loop should be local and through the frame. HF is low current, cut and weld currents are high. In a previous life, I worked with engine management computers and I think if one couldn't handle an HF start on the frame, it would already be dead from normal operation.

It's not just the ECM - which I agree is more robust due to HF circuits within it, its the other devices, up to 129 addressable devices in some vehicles. Additionally, the specification for use of plasma cutters from all the manufacturers I've checked state non-HF start specifically.

If its a pilot arc HF then the HF is internal to the torch... But really you should just try and find a blowback machine, and not have to worry about it
Is the jasic 45 a blowback start? I couldn't find out. The 80 definitely is.

When in rest the nozzle and electrode are touching, when the air starts it pushes the electrode up and breaks contact with the nozzle causing the arc to start between the nozzle and electrodes which then starts the main plasma arc.

Thanks, yes I know there are addressable devices - I had to address many of them. The engine management computer has to be robust and so did the peripherals. There is no point having a robust and operating control unit if the peripherals are dead.

I think the manufacturers are covering their backsides and that is probably a good idea,

Sorry, by addressable devices, I meant other control units, interconnected by CANBus, FlexRay or LIN. Yes, there are sensors & actuators connected to most of these, the majority being related to powertrain or 'human interface'. In general, the peripherals are robust when powered off, it's the other control units that may well be bricked (EEPROM's being wiped / corrupted etc) by a burst of high energy, high frequency noise, where an exhaust pipe, for example, may make a good ad-hoc antenna.

I'm considering a small-ish plasma cutter, criteria are:
Single phase
Portable
Steel clean cut up to ~12mm
No HF start (use on vehicles)

It won't be used all day every day, work use will be for cutting exhausts, ~2.5mm stainless, cutting out the centres of failed dual-mass flywheels (cast steel, ~8mm) along with slicing through various subframe bolts etc.
I also plan to use it for cutting steel & Alu plate, up to around 12mm for my own 'stuff'

I don't want to go the generic Chinese route, although I'm considering the GYS Easycut 40 (Made in GYS's own plant in China) and Cros-Arc 40.
There's roughly £200 difference between them but the GYS has a better clean cut depth, the Cros-Arc is on the spec. for what I need but is the extra capacity and quality worth the extra?
Budget is £650 absolute max.

Any suggestions welcome.

I know what is potentially connected to the bus - I worked with engine management units and data analysis (peripheral) units. All had to be robust because even clearing the odometer is a big deal.

However, as I mentioned, I understand the manufacturer's disclaimers.
