Road safety innit. By having the toll road as straight on you lessen the numbers of impatient <demonised marque> drivers barging across the lanes at the last second.
I would have thought it was the other way round.

I think you'd have to park your self-esteem behind the kitchen door every time you left the house in that thing. Unless, of course, the cosy warm glow of being an eco-warrior and saving the planet compensates for that in your bowels.

The signs, before M6 J11A southbound, seem clear enough. Outside two lanes for the M6 Toll, and inside lanes for M6. It probably simplified construction of the junction, in the first place.

Commercial doesn't have to , more could go by train if we had an efficient train system.
The problem with rail is its brilliant if you've got a 1000 tons of something to move or a load of containers, cars, whatever, but it's no use if you've only got a small ammount of something to shift or it needs to go somewhere that hasn't got a rail handling yard.
Unfortunatly the days of hand loading a couple of milk churns into the guards van to get to market are long gone, and unlikely to ever be seen again.

That was supposedly one of the ideas behind HS2, that more road cargo would be moved on trains, on the old rail lines, and passengers would all go on the new high speed routes.
But double handling of everything would be the crippler. Even if everything were in 40’ containers, it needs to get to the station loading yard, by truck, be craned onto a train, then the same at the other end, with attendant time delays, paperworks, waiting around, dozens of trucks queuing up for loading/unloading etc.

So the 1000 tons of something goes by rail and the smaller consignments of something goes by existing methods but on reduced road traffic. Simples!!

Surprisingly to me, and shamelessly stolen from HERE, more of our freight is moved on the water than by rail.
In 2022, in the UK, 175 billion tonne-kilometres were moved by roads, 25 by water and 16 by rail.

Intermodal freight, is where rail does seem to work well at the moment, most of which ends up or comes from a port.
Inter-modal road freight journeys accounted for 8% (125 million tonnes) of the1.64 billion tonnes of goods lifted by domestic road freight. For these inter-modal road freight journeys, 76% of goods lifted (95 million tonnes) were carried on journeys that began or ended at a shipping dock, 22% (28 million tonnes) on journeys that began or ended at a rail siding or terminal, and the remaining 3% (4 million tonnes) at airports.

This is bang on..rail freight only really works well, with automated handling at both ends, containers, bulk liquids/ powders etc. When I was at sea, the coal and iron ore, would arrive by rail long distances from which ever mine, and be tipped on to conveyors and loaded into the holds, very efficient 150000 ton in 12 hours in some places. Getting it out at the other end was a bit slower.
I live on the edge of the largest commercial forest in England. The timber is harvested, and taken by road to the users, much of it for chipboard. A couple of envirogreenargumentists suggest reopening the rail way. Apart from the huge investment, double handling, from forwarder to lorry, then lorry to train, kills it.

Padeswood cement works near me has re opened the rail line in the last few years and its made quite a difference to the amount of road freight in the area. Obviously not suitable for every industry but makes sense where it can be used.
Materials in and finished goods out, things like this are an ideal candidate for rail links.

UK is down in 17th between Japan and Lituania. I'm surprised at India, I'd have thought they would be more as they're the biggest rail users in the world.
