Its either substitute borax (ie not borax which is just a trade name) or illegally sold but then as there are only like two places in the UK selling proper borax ...........

I don't think that Borax is a trade name - although no doubt the name is used for commercial products - look at the wiki entry:

I ordered some off ebay and it came as 20 mule team borax in a sealed bag. So it is pure borax sold in the uk. I can post more info if needed.

No it is now illegal to sell to non companies (apparently its OK to become seedless as long as you do it while paying taxes)

yes. changed days when we were apprentices we used to get sent to the chemist for a bottle of Hydrochloric acid

Oh well, if that's as cheap as it gets, I'll get that then. Watching blacksmith vids and the way they throw it around like dirt, I thought it would be as cheap as sand.

You can use dry silver sand for hammer / forge welding

Forget what the americans do, you only need to use a little amount, if you keep your metal clean enough you can even forge weld without flux, however it leaves no room for error. A few KG's will last you years.

I only buy it for the tub.

Ironically the last time I bought "a tub" I tried to use it to make popcorn in the microwave.

It worked really well right up to the point where the unpopped corns burned through the bottom

A really neat feature of these tubs is they are tapered. So you can neatly cut the top off and slide the lid fixture back up and have a collapsible/adjustable self sealing tub with lid.
