Where the heck to start (shed tidy up )

Well as it is i think i am at the age of just gone 50 and had enough of messing about. I mean with big projects. boats cars building big stuff. The Vette still needs, well not needs just i want to rebuild the rear suspension. After surgery though a couple months ago for trigger finger in three fingers on my good hand, its no longer good, or better yet, and my left hand needs two doing, which i am not having done yet i am not in the mood for spannering much.

This hell hole need s tidy up. I have got back into fishing big time as i have found again the relaxing and such a chill out it gives. My god it does, and gives my blood sugars a good level haha. ( type 1 diabetic )


My last place to fish which is rare fished by anyone in a local club water. 1/4 mile walk over fields to it and no bugger in site Fisherman are so lazy these days they need s tent from the back of there car lol.

Anyway.... i digress ( my god and i know big words lol or is that posh. )


I want to start to machine stuff more than stuff for work. I cant make up my mind in what but i am not a seasoned machinist. Just hobby with an old WW2 German gun **** lathe and a To Senior milling machine. Both good bits of kit. Lathe may need a fettle, bit like the chuck doesnt spin off etc haha

I have a load of things i have a few projects i need doing in here but cant bloody move. So its clean up time.

Lin Bins are no good, to easy to just chuck junk in them, so i need a sets of drawers instead to organise nut n bolts etc.

This fishing ghear has no over taken the welding table, so i guess that will be done outside or in the gargage. I decided to keep the welder, to good to sell and i hope to stop having the shales so i can Tig again. ill make a few jigs to help there .

So tomorrow nigh ill fire up the burner when i get home from work and it will be nice and warm then ill crack on, aslong as i am not to tired.


Time to look for or decide if to make a set of draws for the bits n bobs. Got two week off this xmas so lots of time

And for those that bother Merry Christmas ( i dont bother anymore )

look at what you have and how you used it

then look at if it would be better elsewhere and with storage around it

pillar drill can be moved elsewhere and be used in a better place whilst the milling machine is near the lathe with full usage even if you wanted to move the lathe to where the fridge is it would be better ive built a shelf over the lathe as its handy to store stuff above it but has a 2ft depth to it on mine or 20"

your store boxes can be moved elsewhere with better access to them right side or even below the window or even on the same wall where the paint is but that can be redisigned easy enough

better storage and also better design would give back more space to work instead of fill in everywhere as i see it

You can either do it in baby steps or dive in and do it all.

Baby steps means starting with one shelf or one corner and just doing that. Chipping away a bit at a time stops you getting overwhelmed. Diving in means gathering things into categories, getting them all together, then sorting out what to keep and what goes.

I used to be a dive in, big tidy upper but these days I struggle with motivation and knowing where to start so I have to do it a bit at a time. It's much slower but done slowly is better than not done at all.

I'd start with the easy stuff. What's obviously for the tip or charity shop?

decent clip together racking would be a good start.....
I have a little more head room then u but both my lathes are under racking with extra storage on top...
all machines are on frames that can get moved with a pallet truck.......
I've even used old kitchen uni9ts for storage.....

I can see floor , so whats the problem ? a light tidy and you will be sorted eh. enjoy the fishing in nice weather n on a miserable day tootle about tidying up ,no rush chill and enjoy .

Ow do guys, well some good suggestions there. I am going to start it this weekend. Start with a harsh clear out. Tip run. I am a bit of a `it will come in one day` chap. reason i have so much stuff. So think i need to just get rid as suggested. Then go from there.

The set out as it is was because of the tables. that take up a lot of room. it cant go where the Mill is as then you cant get around it. Unless its cut down. then the stove is in the way aswell.

I like the set out as it is really. took some planning to get it all in. Its the under table storage that collects a lot of stuff. drawers would help there i think.
Lets see what i end up with once i clean out and tip run.

I was going to get rid of the stove actually and use the diesel heaters i have spare. Can get through some Kerosene though heating the place.

That fishing chair in the second pic looks like it's padded. Is it comfortable for long periods of sitting?

Its this one thats in the back ground, i use it fofr longer sessions and its the best i have had. Can be to comfy as i can fall asleep easy in it lol.

I have the other Ruck seat aswell which has a very hard seat, but still i have done 6hr sessions with it and its been fine. Usually use it for short sessions and walking the canals etc. Greta bit of kit for light sessions.
Only bad thing, which there shouldnt be with that price of chair is that the seat slips down rear legs unless it tightened real well. I have used it four times and its slipped on the first two occasions

You sir do not know the meaning of a hell hole!

Imagine knowing you have the tool / fixings to do the job but not knowing where it is or in the process of looking you knock over yet another "box that needs sorting". Or knocking over the specially purchased set of drawers you purchased and filled with laboriously sorted fixings.

Or coming across something you've been looking for and in the space of 5 minutes dropping it to be forever lost in the tat on the floor. Sometimes lost just by the act or turning around / looking away.

I've actually been physically trapped in my garage when squeezing between car and "stuff" and my rigger booted foot has gone down between something but won't come out.

I don't have to imagine. I can only dream of a set up like yours.

I have to consolidate 3 lock up garages and a shed and the stuff I have at winchboys!
Already sold a few motor bikes and still some to go, might offer my 1930's trailer to a museum?
The plan
We have bought a small lathe well bigger than the Drummond we had and a miller which I think is living at winchboys place.
The lathe will go to my new house as the garage is the square footage of a double but built like a wide long single.
Storage
The plan is to have nothing out on the bench tops, just a shadow board on one wall for the stuff we use daily.
As you may well know I have a few Beach tool boxes so I will have a wall of Beach some with tools in some with other stuff.
I find Bisley type drawers are fantastic as you can store all sorts in them easily and I use them for consumables and other stuff.
Nuts and bolts I have spent years buying some modular drawers that RS made a good few years ago as they slot together and can be made to any size and shape you need.
I am going to sort all the tools out and sell what we have spare ( Once winchgirl has her own set too) then its Market place and possibly the local auto jumble
All the decorating tat and garden stuff will be in a shed as most of it is stuff you need but rarely use.
Remember some stuff is easier bought when you need it and sold when you have finished, we did this with the digger it sat in the garden wanting servicing and waiting for a hose to burst, we sold it and will just hire one when and if we need it again.
Have you seen Alan Millard's workshop tour? Just the bare basics and no long term storage in the workshop.

I got 12 pairs of 90 kg loading triple extending on ball races draw slides So far I've used one pair 16 yrs ago when I put a built in wardrobe in my daughters room .
There are five drawers the bottom v one is 13 inches deep for shoes & any of her heavy stuff it has the triple extenders & a 15 mm marine ply floor set in channels then pinned to the cheeks , as a kiddie she often stood in this drawer ( previous kids from my first marriage taught me not to have a flimsy bottom drawer in the kids bed room . The other five drawers are simple silly kitchen drawer sliders are five inch fronts , top drawer is about 4 foot.6 from the floor . Each drawer is 2 foot deep to the back , 20 inches wide made with care & dove tails and all have 6 mm marine ply floors covered in plain thin hardboard .

Drawer fronts are 12mm HDF given a set pattern using an adjustable home made jig & router then sealed & painted with a wood grain effect paint and scraper , The fronts were glued on with expanding glue then quickly screwed on in half a dozen places from the inside .

When she moved out to adult life it was truly amazing just how much gear she had stashed in those drawers .

I made the drawer cabinet from home drawn plans ....the easy way by getting the HDF cut at B&Q on their precision rack saw , then making a clamped rectangular squared up open front box . For my forth coming new mancupboard i will be making similar drawered cabinets but this time they will be on heavy duty braked lockable 360 wheels .
