where else can I attach my lifting strap to? 300tdi

Finally getting round to swapping the engines over, donor ones all ready to come out, just can't work out where else I can lash my lifting straps too other than 1 on the exhaust manifold.

I only have 2 1 ton straps I got fom work, about a meter long, so 1 other place to even it out.

Ideas?

There are usually bolt points on the engine/heads where eyes can be attached. I use a leveller that has chains and hooks and attch then to bolts on the heads/block.

If you want to use straps they should probably go right under the engine crossing over. So one goes down the left and loops round the sump/block on the right and vice versa and or rachet round the whole engine to hold the straps in.

Ah yes, thats looks like thats easy enough.

I might just strip all the injector pipes ect out the way first just to make it easier and prevent damaging anything.

if you want to make it easy just cut the top front bonnet landing panel out you will have to make some plates up to either weld it back or bolt it after
then you don't have to lift the engine very high to get it out easy to get it back in as well make sure you prop up the gearbox as well
don't worry about injectors just leave them but make sure the straps go round them

Can't you unbolt the panel in front of the engine, IIRC you could on my Range Rover

Disco doesn't unbolt on the slam panel. Cut the front end out and just drag the engine and box out in one, makes life easier if you aren't bothered about the donor vehicle

I'm going to leave the box in for now and just get the engine out, I'll be having to pull the car back from underneath the engine as they'll be no space to move the crane around.

Will be chopping the front out and I doubt the top bellhousing nut is even on after it had a heavy duty clutch fitted, so should be straightforward.

Taken me a whole day, a load of extension bars, Ujs and chopping most the transmission tunnel away.

No chance I'm going to be able to do it cleanly on my actual car

I'm sure I got to the top bell housing bolts by removing the engine mounts and dropping the engine right down , couple of extension bars and bobs your uncle .

you struggeld with the top nut on a 300TDI ( go and slap yourself )

if you want a proper sweary challenge try getting to the same nut on a 4.0 V8 disco 2 ...... it can be done but it is a right twerp

Is it like the bottom bolt on an A series Mini?, could always tell if the clutch had been changed as the bolt was missing. Half a flat at a time with a short open ended spanner

yep it's that kind of bolt, on the V8 it's one of those bolts you need to know is there as you cant see it and barely feel it't ether excavate a hole and put a board over the engine and lie on it while fetteling with it, or about 4 long wobel extension bars and a pair of UJ's or you hope that it's had a clutch and they din't bother refitting it

I cut open the transmission tunnel from inside, removed the transfer box gear stick and all the rubber matting around the tunnel .. and still struggled to get to it.
I am suprised how easily the nuts came off though.

I don't know what I was doing wrong but I could only get the engine down to where the timing case was resting on the steering box.
I'll have everything that's connected to the engine in my car off before removing it (head,ect) so it should make it easier,

Then I'm thinking it's easier to put the engine back in it with no mounts attached to the block, line it up with the gear box with a few nuts then line up the mountings?

I'm really hoping my engine has already been out in the past now

if you can get someone to help you its much easyer,

the easyest way to do it ( but requires about 4 foot of extension bars ) problem is you cant put the socket on the nut and bee on the end of the extension at the same time

but if the cyl head is off s you say it'll be easy to get at just reach down from in the engine bay may help to drop the frount wheels off first or put a board across to lie on

Just ordered more extension bars to get to it cleanly, I'm sure I'll still manage to struggle.

At work with it now, front core plugs sprung a leak and the lift pumps just rattling away (changed that a couple months ago!)...
I think it's time I finally took it off the road lol
If it gets me home that is

Managed to get the top left/right nuts off very easily, top middle wasn't there ..
Thought perfect, everything's come off without any issues on all of the engine (stripped everything off first) ... then one of the 15mm bellhousing nuts rounded off and I'm stuck on how to get the damn thing off

Might be able to get an angle grinder in, don't have anything smaller

Hoping to have the other engine in by Tuesday, how hard can putting it back in be

I've just done the clutch on my disco, have to say it was a lot easier this time than I remember it being! Although I did have to make the worlds most bodged extension bar out of an old 9/16 socket and a piece of 30 mm tubing to get the exhaust down pipe nuts off. Also have to burn the anti roll bar off as the knuckles had flipped and jammed it :/

Well they've made my life a hell of a lot easier!
Two of the nuts on the bellhousing rounded off, no chance of getting anything in .. didn't even need to hammer anything on just put the 16 mm one on a 15mm nut and it came straight off.

Unsuccessful mating the engine to the gearbox though, just couldn't get it to engage in

Working 6 days and getting dark by 5 now means I have to leave it a week
