Where does acetylene come from???

This may sound silly,how is acetylene made.. I do know propane is a byproduct from refining

When I first started we used to have acetylene generators, two types they were either water to carbide or carbide to water, we used to have a water to carbide one and a hydraulic back pressure valve to arrest flashbacks, then one day the factory inspector (as they were then called) came in took one look and got a little excited to say the least, the next day it was in the scrap bin and replaced with a DA cylinder.

Known as Carbide , it was the standard for cars and bikes for long enough.

Something to do with a reaction of Calcuim carbide and water ,if I remember correctly. Not sure if that’s how it’s made commercially,but you can make it with that reaction

I’ve seen it made like that in India. My cousin is a refrigeration engineer
