I bought a few of these (e bay item number 150521510405) from one of the £1 shops sorry i can't remember which one it was.
i don't need the magnifier just yet, but i have dismantled them and used the parts for the same purpose you describe. probably worth buying the one then it wouldn't be that hard to make your own longer arms, just rods with a ball turned into the ends for flexibility.
i do use a super magnet on the base to hold it steady when the all the arms are on.
it is quite stable in use and is definately easier to get that first tack in place.

Magnet/steel the other side of the material, so its gripped between the 2 should work.

I like the idea of flexy wire, but I also have that tragic small boy thing which involves making my own mechanisms and devices.
When they are sorted I will post some photo's,

If you're looking for a medium that will bend to shape and hold it's position you could try getting the softer 'black iron' steel-fixer's tying wire, and twisting a bundle of about 10 or 12 into a single length. That works pretty well.
