Where can I get offcuts?

Anybody know where I can get small quantities of steel from?
Only local supplier can order it in but in 10m lengths (after 2 1/2" - 3" bar BTW but only 3" of it!)
Tried the model engineer suppliers I know of but they either don't do that size or it costs a fortune to supply 24" lengths and even more to post to Jersey!
Any ideas greatfully received.

local fabbrication companies often have offcuts and most have a skip full of various steel bits and bobs
failling that have a word at the scrap merchants

Ebay - I needed 125mm of 50mm aluminium - no problems, they even cut it to size for me.

Check their feedback to make sure they deliver it quick.

Thanks guys but only two local scrappies and they only do old immersions and alloy beer cans (no fabrication left anymore, all shipped in )
So far good old eBay won't touch Jersey as its 'abroad'.

Shame I don't have access to a gas axe, the lorry next to our car park could be missing a half shaft one day

B E J Engineering http://stores.shop.ebay.co.uk/B-E-J-Engineering I have used them loads, a perfect seller for small quants - might be worth an email to see if they will ship it to you

Metals Direct http://stores.shop.ebay.co.uk/MetalsDirectUK__W0QQ_armrsZ1 - again, I have used them, but they do not say about 'overseas' shipping

I find it astonishing that there are no workshops on the island; surely there's a blacksmiths or jobbing engineers of some kind?

We have an iron works next to us at work but all the material is shipped in according to the job required and the bits left sent back as scrap.
The last blacksmith I know of closed some time ago

There is one engineering company but again they'll only order me a 5m length.

I echo your sentiments KTMMICK, i would have gladly sent him the bit that he requires and only asked for the postage, but i do not have any round bar with such a large cross-section. I will see what the local metal recyclers have in stock when i am around there.

I've got a 3ft length of 3½" round steel bar knocking about if that's any good. I have no powered hacksaw or cutting equipment, just a 9" disc cutter with a cheapo diamond blade, whether that would suffice I have no idea.
Other than that, you'd have to bung me whatever it costs me to get cut (prolly a fiver) + carriage costs.

I've managed to get hold of a bit of 2" bar which I've err 'modified' with some 4mm 6013's
Hopefully after some enthusiastic milling it won't look too bad

demag, I take it you know Dave? I never thought of calling him (he was the instructor on one of my evening classes, had to call it a day due to out of hours work )

Cheap diamond blades don't usually cut steel, they are for stone or concrete and will be dangerously overheated by metal cutting, 9" abrasive blades for steel are not expensive. Diamond blades for masonry and steel are around the £130 mark and are for cutting reinforced lintels not solid steel so check your disk before you risk it.
