where can I buy an air rifle?

Ahh scopes, buy the best you can afford. Scopes are all pretty much of a muchness in good light. It’s in poor conditions where cheaper scopes show their real failings. I would spend 2k on a scope if I thought it would gain me an extra quarter of an hour daylight at each end of the day. So far the most I have spent is 1600 on a schmit and bender. Two and a half times the price of the rifle! It wasn’t an all singing all dancing scope, no parallax adjustment, no illuminated reticle, no tactical turrets. Simple 3-12x50 mildot scope. You don’t need all the crap on a scope that the sales rep tells you that you must have. There is a lot to be said for keeping things simple

I see your point but at non-fac ranges you aren’t liable to suffer all that badly in low level imho, certainly not enough to warrant splashing 1600 on a leupold or a Schmitt and bender. I did however borrow the landowners rifle the other month when I went rabbiting and packed up much earlier than I would’ve normally due to failing light, it was only a cheapy scope

Up here, if you held an FAC or SGC you could retain your airguns without applying for an AWC until your next renewal (basicaly) but you were unable to purchase any new airguns.

I've just had a renewal so added the airweapon cert for an extra 5quid. Hopefully, if they are daft enough to bring in licensing down south they go down the same route. Storage isn't quite as strict for them, I.E. it doesn't have to be an approved cabinet blah blah blah.

No. I wont.

I have access to a few acres of scrubland so just gonna set up a few targets.

I have no interest, or need, to shoot animals -I wont shoot what I can't eat - and rabbits are few and far between.

@bigegg Do you want this scope to play with free, gratis & for nowt - it's taking up bench space here and I'd sooner someone at least might get some use for it.

You don’t need to buy a S and B to get quality, a few hundred will get you a reasonable scope that will transmit light a lot better than a £50 scope. The best scope of all was a S and B, 8x56 with a 25mm tube, these can be picked up secondhand at reasonable prices

My worst scope is a Hawke varmint, 6-24x44, daylight it’s ok a wee bit hazy, poor light and it’s go home time unless you have the lamp there. I bought an MTC viper, 6x24-56, I bought it secondhand for £180. It is as clear during the day as my Schmidt but lacks clarity in poor light. I still get extra time using this scope. It has all the bells and whistles but at the poor end of the scale. The parallax adjustment works but the clarity doesn’t match up with the distance marks on the wheel. No biggie as I use a range finder anyway. It has tactical turrets but doesn’t need them, the reticle is in mils

Fair point. Must say, the nikko Stirling mountmaster I have on mine does the job well

Thats the problem with massive zoom lenses too many lenses in them.

I prefer a 8x56 with a 30mm tube that will pull a fair bit of light in when its closing in.

I have a couple of Nikko Sterling scopes, back in the day they were the go to scope of lots of stalkers. Handy as spares

Both of mine are are 3-9x40 half mill for one set came on the pax then I upgraded the BSA to the same as that still had its original sights on

My air rifle has a niko sterling scope as does my .22 rimfire, the 243 a meopta scope, both 3-12x 50, the difference at dusk is really noticable, with a lamp at night I cant really tell the difference. But then I dont take them both out at the same time.

There was a great abundance of air rifles of all shapes and sizes, with prices from a tad over a 100 to lots and lots.

It would have been awfully easy to spend many tool tokens on things that go bang and their additional widgets.
