Since getting my welder around Xmas time I have only done a few bits here and there. Yesterday I repaired part of the frame tube on my motorbike frame and reattached a footrest hanger.
I know I am doing a few things wrong and I am trying to consciously put them right. For example I am angling the torch far too much. Maybe as a consequence I am having to get too close with the torch tip, or at least that is how it fields.
I have a bit of a concern I am not getting the penetration I need sometimes and I am finding that the settings on the MIG are pretty limited (i.e. 1 and 2 with low and high plus wire speed). Settings seem too high or too low although I suspect that with the right technique they would be fine.
When I grind the welds down I often end up with quite a few pinholes and/or welds that are almost like a figure of 8 (like 2 tack welds next to each other). It just doesn't look neat. None of my welds are particularly structural and by and large the strength seems to be there but I need to improve.
What pearls of wisdom do the more experienced on here have to offer?
Thanks
