petrol 4shilling and sixpence a Gallon a pound filled the T110 up for a week wage £4-19-6 pence apprentice mechanic 1968
bought a minivan for £10.00 no test
pair of sills and adjust 2 ball joints was my first car on the road it even had a back seat conversion

Any one remember buying petrol at 2/6 a gallon .

In 1961 aged nearly 11 I scrimped & saved ,worked my fingers sore pulling broad beans then purchased 3 gallons on a ticket from our village garage so I could give it to my Aunt .


a gallon of petrol 2/6 pence or half a crown to day 12 and a half p roll on the good old days lol.

The only person in the street to own a car said he'd give up driving if it every went above that 2/6 price.. I took the pee out of him some thing wicked in a nice way when it hit 10 bob & he was still bitching & driving .

Late 50s, when I was 13, we had an old bike, AJS or Matchless I think, and we bought a gallon of paraffin and filled a milk bottle with a pint of petrol. Filled float bowl with petrol to start it then switch tank on and it would run on paraffin quite happily. I doubt you would get served trying to fill a bottle with petrol these days
Paraffin then was half the price of petrol, now it’s twice the price. About 8 years later when I had a small motorcycle shop I sold paraffin for 2s 0d ( 10p) a gallon or 9s 6d for five gallons delivered . Had quite a few customers who had Aladdin paraffin heaters, even one old chap who had a paraffin cooker as well. No Calor gas heaters back then.

First time someone showed me SMS messaging on a Hutchison Telecom (to become Orange) mobile phone - may have been 1995/1996 (not sure of exact date).

I never thought it would catch on! No really I just laughed at it. How wrong I was!


Hold this thought - I was at work before bank cards and ATM cash machines - I was over 21 before I used an ATM machine.

For me the biggest advances that I wish we had back in the day is clothing. Not the fact that you can buy cheap tat at Pri-marni but the technical stuff. The gear that will keep you dry, warm is a bonus, in all weathers and boots that don't let the water in.

i remember Midland bank ATM cards all you got was a tenner card was good for 20 uses stamped a dot on card every time it was used late 70s early 80s

With our machines, iirc the customer bought 'vouchers' to the value of £10. These had punched holes in them which located on spikes [along these lines

] on the 'pop open' drawer. Place voucher on spikes, close drawer and you were rewarded (mostly) with your cash as mentioned above.

Ohhh, what fun the scrotes had putting sachets of sauce [and worse! ] in the drawer - you can imagine the call-outs and cleaning involved.

can anyone remember when(what year) diesel was half the price of petrol, then they decided car drivers using diesels had an unfair advantage and upped the price..at the time I think petrol was about £1 maybes just over and diesel about half for a gallon IIRRC...

My dad worked with a bloke who lived a few valleys over.
He used to start his Lagonda on petrol, drive to the bottom of the valley, then switch to parrafin.
When he got to Tredegar he switched back to petrol, so the carbs were full of petrol when he got to work.

Some years after that must have been, my dad said if it ever got to £2 a gallon he'd be walking... his best compromise was to buy the most economical car he could find, a Renault Megane which used to give him 60mpg. Bit ironic given that when I started driving in the early 80s, he always told me not to buy a foreign car as they were more unreliable and cost more to fix.

I was lucky, my Dad never steered me wrong. Growing up I always thought I was treated unfairly compared to other kids. On my school holidays and many weekends I had to work with him on the housing tracts or projects, but he taught me discipline and how to be self sufficient; something I didn't realize until I got out on my own in the world.

Went with a mate to buy a bond mini ( Villiers 9e in the front) my mate offered him £1 but the owner said it's not worth that I'll take 10 bob. We had a couple of years fun in that . Different times.

that would be a model G with the option of the 2t twin all had the dyno start but a lot didn't work hence open bonnet and kick

My uncle had one of those Bonds; he and my dad took their respective birds (aka wives) to a holiday park somewhere on the coast: three of them had to get out so it would get up the access road. Mind you my mother never did pack light

I certainly recall going to France in the mid-90s when DERV was half the price it was here. Europe soon saw fit to follow our pricing, rather than the other way around

I recall a mate describing how you sent one of the new 'electronic mails'... it involved about five programs and a 4800K modem IIRC.

I worked at Yorkshire Bank 1980-82 when they got the 'Minibanks' installed - I think it took two staff to mess about with them twice a day. It was a long time before the payday queues went down though; housewives coming in armed with hubby's payslip from ICI or British Steel and drawing out all but about 50p.
