Interestingly on my jeep it's the other way around, the dog as shown by @CompoSimmonite is on the end of my handle and the nut on the crank pulley is hollow with a bar across. Is there any benefit to either way ?

Quite a few cars used the end of the starting handle (the pin across the shaft) as the driving element for the scissor jack, so it was dual purpose. I distinctly recall some cars having the crankshaft handle dogs long after they'd ceased to be hand-startable ie, no hole in the bumper for the handle and no mention of it in the handbook.

Dad had an old 400e thames van with vac wipers, clog it up a hill or accelerate past a car and they used to stop. Run flat out when stopped at traffic lights and die when on the move, brilliant

Na you got it all wrong, it's a safety feature that was years ahead of it's time, it works like this...

The faster you drive the slower the wipers work so that when it's light rain you can still drive at a reasonable speed but when it rains hard and you need the wipers to work faster you have to drive slower and therefore much safer in the wet. Clever huh

Ah but I did just that earlier this year, folded the windscreen down onto the bonnet put my biker jacket on and a woolly hat and I was off having fun in the snow, it was great fun just using rear wheel drive, I only needed 4wd to get back up our hill, mind you my face was frozen numb in under 10 minutes

I was really referring to the inability of vacuum wipers to cope with snow [or, well, any weather really ]

I used to have a 3 series, it was a handful in the snow with the traction control turned off even with a few paving slabs in the boot, it did put a smile on my face but there was no way it would get up our hill with even just a smidge of snow on the ground.

I bought a old Wolsey in 1957 for £5 at Coopers auction in Newcastle. The radio was under the drivers seat , half the size of a suitcase. It never ever worked when I had it but neverthelessit was a car with a wireless.

When I were a lad of six an Etype was a thing of beauty and only cost £2000 new , still a thing of beauty but its now worth £100,000. Well they are if they are like this one that has been garaged from new, fully documented history, one previous owner and never been welded , crashed or bodged.

@8ob that is gorgeous, I was reading that they are building brand new ones that are fully electric or you can get your original converted. As great as electric maybe the missing engine soundtrack would be a deal breaker for me.

A friend of mine bought one in about 1972 for I think it was £250. A 1964 fhc, if he'd kept it what an investment that would have been.

I have noticed prices have come down slightly last few years with these E types..having said that they and others are still better than paper money tied up into savings..

Certainly a beautiful shape, Such a big change of deign compared with my XK 120, and XK 150, Cant help looking at the early Etypes and wondering why the h@ll didn't the wheels and tyres fill those wheel arches.

Plus you get to drive them around and enjoy them, I don't think you'd look cool driving around in a bank statement.

I restored a rotten £800 Etype about forty years ago, it was an absolute nightmare . There were no resto shops back then selling things like bumpers , new door seals , panels , trim etc so it was a very much a case of make do and mend. I deseamed , debumpered and removed all the chrome trim on mine because I could not afford or find new, fitted vented discs etc off later jags and firmed up the springs/shocks, engine was lightly breathed on at the same time and I junked the moss gearbox in favour of the later synchro box . Went like a bat out of hell and looked like a mongrel cross between an Etype and a light weight Etype.
