When I say drop, I mean drop and temporarily remove to decorate or plaster etc.
Just get it out of your way.
The biggest problem is when switched off it'll be full of water and the lock shield and/or TVR (thermostatic radiator valve) can weep, even when closed tight.
Support the rad along its length at its base, in line with where it currently hangs, a couple of 3 x 2 or similar.
Loosen the lock shield and the TVR, from the tail that enters the rad, don't remove the tail that goes into the radiator!
You might get some weeping, catch this in Chinese carry-out trays or similar, or wrap clothes around the couplings. It shouldn't be much and it won't take long.
Now lift the rad of the hangers just slightly away from the wall, it should rest on the supports you placed under it. Now pivot the rad on the supports, that'll let you rest the top of the rad on the floor.
The rad now slopes down from the fittings and will retain the water when you disconnect the TRV and lockshield. NOW be careful carrying the rad out as it'll happily spill its horrible blackened contents all over the carpet as you move.
You will find most lockshield will stop water and the TVR might pass, even when screwed down to close. Now all you need is a 1/2 inch nut fitting, a 1/2 washer and a 5 pence piece. Any 1/2" washer will do as long as it engages with the outer rim of the 5-pence piece.
Just screw the fitting nut onto the TVR and it'll stop the weeping and you can get on with doing your thing, whatever that is, and not worry about the water that's leaking.
