When does--- rod become bar? sheet become plate? tube become pipe?etc ,just curious, same with wood when does a board become a plank,or a beam become a baulk,or a girder and so on ,probably gonna open a tin of worms here,looking forward to answers,

sheet becomes plate at 3mm, tube is tube all the way as far as I know, pipe i would imagine is when it`s made to a standard, like sch10/20/30. At a guess rod becomes bar at 6 or 8mm, thats where i`d change over the terminology anyway.

Wood, havent a clue where to start, but i`d guess it might be more to do with the end area, ie 20x100 would be a board, whereas 20x200 would be a plank, but 10x200 would be back to a board. Complete guess at that though

rod is used for axial loading and torsion . but bar can be used for axial tortion as well as bending loads thats one example not that i knew that just did what everyone else does wikpedia sheet is up to 3mm thick after that it becomes plate

Pipe is pipe. Tube is tube.

Pipe is designed to flow things through it, and as such is designated by internal diameter. Tube is just a circular profile section, and like everything else is designated by its external diameter.

Sheet becomes plate at around 1/8th as Jay said.

15mm central heating pipe is 15mm OD, 1/2 inch central heating pipe is (was) 1/2 inch bore.

That's why you can use 15mm solder fittings on 1/2 inch pipe.

Boiler tubes have hot gas flowing through them, I can't think of a pipe that doesn't have a fluid flowing through it though.

Well, I can't say why domestic pipe is known by O.D., maybe because fitting it is more important than its flow rate? But a pipe is for carrying fluids, a tube isn't.
