When do you do your best work?

I was thinking about this yesterday as I was posting up my exhaust repair thread. I wondered if anyone noticed that I tend to post stuff like that late in the evening. That's because on a weekend it's common for me to do very little in the morning, potter about in the afternoon but then get stuck in late afternoon/early evening or even late evening. I think it is because I work full time so on a weekday I won't do anything on a weekday until after the evening meal.

Sometimes my wife says to me that if I got more done in the daytime I'd be able to chill out in the evening, but I don't think that's true, all it will mean is that I'm more tired from working all day AND all evening.

So, for me it's evening time. What about you?

I usually feel more enthusiastic in the evening, after feeling lazy and bored all day. I rarely actually do anything in the evening though.

I've got three kids under 8. The answer is obvious

Even when I'm making music il play about during the day but it's not till the evening I get into a groove and get some work done
Only problem. It's 1am before you know it and you have to roll out of bed for 6

I think I work best in the evenings. Certainly in my workshop at home I do, but I also love early mornings. Up and listen to the Farming news on Radio 4, breakfast and out into the shop. Evenings are my favourite though.

Coincidentally in my professional life I almost always work nights and through choice.

My own stuff; usually late afternoon and evening. I got up early this morning intending to do the ceiling and walls in the kitchen. I got side tracked with breakfast/50 miles on bike/dinner/daughter walk to park, no doubt the roller will hit the paint around 5pm

At Work Im at my most productive for the first 4 or 5 hours then it tapers off in the pm.

Evenings I want to get out there but the new job is leaving me tired and I seldom do at the moment. I often make a battle plan but they seldom make it past first contact.

I have a strategy for this. If I'm too tired to do anything, I'll do a round of tidying. I find that nothing damps my enthusiasm more than facing a messy workshop. I'll muster the energy to at least straighten the place out then when I do want to do some productive work I know I can get right into it, rather than fighting through piles of crap on the workbenches.

4 hours in the morning is worth more than 6 on an afternoon at work I always do jobs fault finding 1st thing when your brain is fresh and if the job goes south theres plenty of time to remedy it

I am an early riser, so usually in and going by 0630. Working for others the rest typically arrived somewhere around 0900, that 2 1/2 hours I got more done than the rest that followed.... best work is when I get peace to do it, and no one bothering me constantly... just need a clear head to get on with it..

I also use this strategy. I find it works really well. Also just putting things straight clears my mind.

100% with you on that, I have spent 8 weeks of lockdown 'improving' my workshop just in case I have to start back in there full time. I really could have done with another 4-6 weeks as it's still a mess but I see a light way off in the distance.

It depends what I’m up to. If it’s hobby related then anytime that takes the mood really. I’m lucky enough not to have nearby neighbors so noise is never an issue.

If it’s writing a report for work then most productive after dinner with the lights dimmed in the office and radio on in background. I just find I can focus more when it’s dark outside

I'm the same Pete. Today's been particularly lazy and I haven't long come out to the workshed!

9-5 doesn't suit me in terms of a work day. I would be better working midday-8pm if you wanted to pin me to hours. I am a late riser naturally and often not to bed until 1-2am - so if I have an early start for work, I am truly knackered by the end of the day. I can rarely sleep before midnight!

The way work is at the moment though, I seem to be working most hours and find it hard to switch off at all!
