quite agree, ive used that method a few times and found the outer race actually dropped out.

I had a ball shoot out like a bullet on a MGTF front hub. Never found it, probably embedded in the garage wall somewhere.

On the issue of workpiece supporting, has anyone else got one of these universal hub support kits - gert lump of aluminium and various pegs to be screwed in to support the hub. I bought one but havn't used it yet.

I have seen one of these is use! Garage behind me has one (they are expensive) It spurred me to make a lower tech version from a length of 50mm bar with a 16mm hole threaded in it for a length of 16mm threaded rod. Now I too have an adjustable support!

If/when these drop in price they could be a useful bit of kit to have around and may replace "naked flame" heating.

ditto I have watched my mates remove a nut that I have struggled with within minutes with a bit of heat in the right place, might have had a result on the bearing front, I was looking at approx £45.00 for a new bearing for the daughters car and have just agreed to buy the full assembly hub. bearing and carrier guaranteed in good order for £23.00 delivered so hopefully as haynes say installation is a straight forward reversal of removal.

Dont forget you will have to get it re-tracked, when you fit the new assembly, only it will cost you tyres if not checked.

Hi just thought I'd update this, I decided to go and pick up the replacement hub assembly rather than waiting on delivery so I could get the job done, I am pleased to say it's now fitted and my daughters car is back on the road, many thanks for all the advise given, I have certainly learned from this experience and if I have to do this job again I'll certainly be running a weld bead around the race and making sure the piece is fully supported if I need to use the press, thanks again Norm.
