Wheel arch rolling for tyre clearance

Amazon let me down. Prime delivery didn't come through and the app shows it as tomorrow before 10pm ffs. The ebay seller is not providing tracking details for the one I ordered with 24hr shipping a week ago. Not having much luck maybe something will turn up tomorrow. I sure hope it does to get this job forking done

However this turns out it's going to be better than my method 40 years ago on a 3 litre Capri...pliers and a rubber mallet to fit a set of banded steels under the arches

I find prime can be very hit and miss. It can be next day to our work address in Aughnacloy but 3 days to the girlfriends in Fermanagh.

Good progress tonight.

The China tool arrived and predictably required some fettling. Biggest issue was the m14 s class wheel bolts didn't fit through the slots! My cut 50 plasma made quick work of enlarging the oles. Some people say the nyloc adjuster nut on back can come off and cause damage. So I welded it on.



I used a heat gun to warm up the panel edge and about 8 inches away as someone suggested here.

No major cracking issues with the paint. The paint was not great to start with. I did cause a couple of small chips at the edge where the arch has been welded before. I'll touch those in. Besides that no damage.

The inner arch is folded flat on itself now:



So this is the side done and wheel back on and car dropped down using MB Star diagnostic Computer



This is the other side not done yet. See how the car is sitting higher and on the tyre.

This car has hydraulic suspension. So it can do alot of different tests using MB Star.

Such as a pitch front to rear. Which was perfect for checking the difference between rolled and unrolled arch.

First- left rear arch is unrolled. Second / right rear arch has been rolled.

It's tight but the rolled arch now appears to fit and the car isn't sitting on top of the edge of the tyre. Fingers crossed when I complete the other side tomorrow night the rubbing may be gone.

As I said the car needs a repaint anyway. I'll likely touch in the chipped areas for this summer and live with it.

The only area which may still be suspect is at the very back of the arch.



I could give this a more aggressive pull. But in doing so I'd more thab likely have to bring forward the repaint! Don't want to press it yet unless it is still rubbing on road tests. When the car drops now it feels like there is about 1 - 2mm clearance in there. Not touching. But over bad bumps that might hit so I'll keep that in mind.

We used to get the paint warm, with the car jacked up. Then place a small pile of magazines around the tyre and let the jack off.

The arch folds around under pressure and give a nice consistent flare.

Has to be 'Cars and Car Conversions' though

Comparing my video to this S600 Rodeo test (where the car pitches and rolls) it looks like its on the bump stops.

Which likely means my 600 is on the bump stops here on the rolled arch side

That’s pretty cool how the suspension does that. Reminds me of the williams FW whatever it was.

Nice job on the rolling. I had an older 323 hatch years ago that I put mags on that were too wide. The arches rubbed the tyres with anyone in the back seat or with aggressive driving … but to be honest it did it for 3 years and I never actually had an issue.

If you’ve got a little bit left could you lick it with an angle grinder ?

That's a common place for tyre rubbing on lowered Pug 205 & 306's. Usual solution was to loosen & slide the bumper back a bit, slotting the holes if needed. There was also a panel seam running across that had to be bent back. It left a small step where the bumper meets the wheel arch but that was better than the drrrrr noise every time you hit a bump.

I got the other rear arch cut and rolled in the same manner tonight.

I took it for a short, fast drive over a really bumpy B road nearby. It is a massive improvement. I say improvement because it did still rub once on a really bad hollow. A light rub all the same and only 1. Whereas before on that test trip it would have hit 20+ times.

I will drive it to work tomorrow and see. That road is over a mountain and the last time I took my 600 it rubbed about 12 - 14 times each way. Thst was also with the suspension lifted with the dash ramp button. So if I can drive to work tomorrow morning at a normal pace and it doesn't rub with normal suspension ht then I'd consider this case closed.

If its still an issue then I'll have to look again and see what is causing it.

Ps is there any sort a spray chalk type product anyone can recommend?

Something which can easily wash off. And that I would spray inside the inner arches and take the car for a drive to see any witness marks left behind where the tyre may still be rubbing under certain conditions.

Rub a bit of chalk on any likely areas or a silver sharpie.

OK so I drove up the mountain B roads to work this morning.

Massive improvement but the left rear arch is still rubbing under certain conditions.

Therefore I'll have to take another look at that one and see if there is any more clearance to be had or what exactly is rubbing. But it can't be much left at this stage
