Well, I knew there was a bit of rust around the inside of the rear wheel arches and rear seatbelt anchor points. So today I thought it would be a good idea to have a look and maybe make a couple of small repairs. I duly poked at the rust with a screwdriver, creating a few holes, it’s a little worse than I’d hoped but never mind.
So, I’ll just clean up the surrounding area so I can weld some patches in...
I proceeded to chase rust the entire length of the wheel arch. Until cutting back to clean metal gave me this nice big hole to fill with nice fresh shiny new steel.
Rather more work than I’d bargained for (and that’s only one side), but it needs doing now.
Right, I’m fairly inexperienced at this welding malarkey and would appreciate some advice:
Most of the rust seems to have occurred where there are 2 layers (or 3 in some places) of steel, I am planning on thoroughly cleaning and treating all the remaining surface rust on the floor flange and paint with weld-thru primer before welding the repair patches in place. Is there anything else I can do to reduce the chances/delay the rust returning?
Also some of the rust seems to have occurred in the area surrounding a previous repair, what would you recommend for covering the repaired area (i.e. paint/underseal/stonechip/waxoyl etc)?
Should be a fun day tomorrow
Thanks
Oriel
