What’s with the spam that’s appeared last two days

Hi, did all the spam appear due to the Forum being hacked or is there another explanation how it got there? Took the warning & didn’t click on any of the links

It looks like repeated attempts to see how secure the site is to spam.

Don't click on the links.
The IP of the sender will be s genuine one. But may be already hacked. So it will appear to be secured.

The Spam merchant will be looking for personal details. From Bank to address of any thing.

It's never from the same IP address so we can't block it and it looks like the IP is spoofed anyway. This morning's attempt resolved to France, yesterday's was The Netherlands, the day before was Venezuela.
The StopForumSpam filter doesn't catch it either as it's probably done ad-hoc.
We just have to deal with it as it appears.

It sounds like they are bouncing the attack from one place to another.

Can be done.

I guess that the site can only see their External IP address, not the internal originating IP?

We can see the IP address they used when they joined and any others they use when they post but they are probably using software to make it appear that they're posting from somewhere they're not.

Just banned another, the country he stated when he joined was "New York" but the IP address resolved to Iceland.
If the collar doesn't match the cuffs I usually just get rid of them.

Ah, fairly basic stuff. If you are going to VPN to another country, it is daft not to see which country it actually is! I also don't see the point in SPAMming us in Mandarin? Seems a bit pointless to me.

We seem to have a regular guest poster offering free lessons in Mandarin at the moment. Please everyone click the report button if you see spam - it's easier to see there is something to deal with when there are a bunch of reports. It's a little tricky to automate a defense as the spammer is human but we'll figure something out.

I just click report user its easier

then like other day warned others with a post about user

it helps to drop them down low enough that way

however ive been known to wind them up on another forum with other users

some are just plain boring

Most of the time I access the Forum on my phone. I don't bother with VPN on that yet.
I don't think I have VPN installed on the PC I am running yet either. I have had to switch to windows 10 and wanted to make sure network was up to speed before I messed about.
My main problem at the moment is I pay vodaphone for sky sports on my phone and they have just blocked streaming.
I am with Virgin for TV so tried their TV Go and that blocks streaming also.

So I am trying to find a legal route to get sky on my phone and be able to stream it to the TV when away in the 5th wheel. I can't find one sadly.

Oh BTW Redditch is where virgin purports to terminate....but my PC ain't in Redditch. Lol

Just report it, all mods then get an alert and the first to see the alert can deal with it.
