What's this vice made from

Hi all I'm wanting to make a new end for this bracket and then, of course, weld it back on.

Would this be steel or cast iron does anyone know?

Might be wrought iron lots of flaky layers that may not weld. Leg vices are OLD.

I’m not sure if it’s worth the effort, there are three holes already on the bracket that should suffice. I think I would just cut the end bit off and neaten it up

Hi many_methods a grinding test on the vice material will provide information on its nature. Check on internet for full details.

Don't weld it.
Make a new part and braze it on.

Bolt a strap to it to hold it on.
