I think it's an upgrade for a 2CV

No question it's a very early two cylinder outboard, maybe Evinrude, around the 1910/20 period.

Good call. Could you put 'elto light twin' into Google and see if anything takes your fancy. A photo of the top of the flywheel of the one in the OP, if it has the four holes, would be a good clue.

Thanks, getting close I think - this would seem to be earlier than the aluminium elto engine though.

That would be my guess. That flange is far too big to fit an outboard drive leg.

Unless you can't see everything I can't see it being an engine as I can't see any exhaust ports

The exhaust are the grey bit connecting the exhaust ports on the cylinders.
The carb fits onto the crankase the other side, second hole up, looks like a reed valve or something bolted onto the case.
I've allready said the lower tapered adaptor is not original.
Its's a two stroke horizontally opposed petrol 2 stroke, most likely an outboard, unless you know different.
