Yes, however, the cat might go missing.....Could extend it to the rest of the house…makes the vacuum cleaner redundant…

The useless on/off/speed touch controls went faulty on ours and the manufacturer said it was obsolete.
But we liked the overall design. So I gutted it of all the gubbins including motor, enlarged the extraction hole in the wall from 4" to 6", fitted an inline 6" fan on the other side of the wall, and a separate on/off switch and speed control. I threw away the expensive to run halogen spots, fitted a 12v transformer and LED spots along with a new switch.
It could now probably suck a golf ball through a hose pipe, costs less to run and is a lot quieter.

Job done. Luckily had some paint left from decorating as the vent cover was smaller than the old one

Just been having a look through my photos. The old one lasted 6 years which is fair do’s really it was only a cheap one 
In our last house, circa 1999, I was in the ventilation business and made a few cook top hoods for high end houses.. We had a custom made stainless steel hood based on commercial requirements and with a 400mm roof mounted vertical discharge centrifugal fan. Nice and quiet, but would suck up small children if you wound it up. It was overkill, but we never had food smells in the house. I will see 8f I can find some photos.

That's a good idea using an in line fan, I've recently purchased two 150 mm Chinese ones . One is in place as a wet room extractor sucking in from two points via 110 mm soil waste pipe Elbows & a Y connection in the wet room set in the roof void . The other fan is a spare as they are easily interchangeable should/ when the in use one fails .
At £38 a pop two more would be much cheaper than a complete new kitchen hob units & future change outs are likely to be simple clip in units , so no hour or more on a step ladder trying to make the new model fit the mounting holes of the old dead extractor .
Like you said they are very very quiet , IIRC the one I've got in the wet room extracts around 10 cubic metres a minute . I've put it on an extending on timer , making all the electric wiring easy change idiot proof plug and go connectors . Ten connectors cost me £5 a year ago and the timer circuits £9 each plus ( three for price of two ) air tight ABS enclosures for the circuit boards at £9 for the three ( special offer from China ) . I can change the extractor or the fan control in about 2 minutes flat through the roof void trap door whilst on a stepladder as I wired them adjacent to the trap door specifically for this event .

Had to redo the two wall plates either side of my gas hob ,, the kitchen fitter changed the order to a bigger hob making the sockets closer than 110 mm to the edge of the hob . so all my design & wiring & tiling had to be altered to comply with regulations before the in current compliance Sparky would commission & sign off the whole new total bungalow rewire.
