MIG uses inert gas
MAG is flux core wire with no gas
Anyone know what he's reffering too?
Thanks guys, i was told by someone today that a mag welder will make the gun tip magnetic giving better welds. Anyone know what he's reffering too?
Ian.
Sorry for the daft question, but what makes a welder a mag welder? surely all welders are mig/mag capable?
Thats complete pish!!
Copper cannot be magnetised
You should point and laugh at whoever told you that :full
Some are MIG only as they are hardwired for the DCEP polarity of gas MIG welding.
A MIG/MAG welder will have terminals so you can swap the polarity.

i will laugh hysterically and point at the said person.
Let me guess... one of the many Auto-Factors flying around like idiots with an oil filter and a spark plug & "yes, we can supply you a MIG"??
weldequip
MAG doesn't refer to the ability to use fluxed wire. All so-called MIG welders that use gas are MIG/MAG.
The polarity reversible Shenion mentions refers to gas/gasless, the polarity is different depending which you use, in theorey anyway!
So a gas/gasless will have a means of reversing the polarity, a welder designed for either/or and not both won't have that facility.
Its all in the gas, nothing whatsoever to do with polarity.
Use argon as your sheilding, you have MIG
Use a argon/co2 mix, youll have a MAG welder.
The encompasing term though is MAGS
