whats a decent brand of feeler gauge?

looking for a set of metric feeler gauges , dont need to be best of the best but prefer something thats reasonble quality /can be trusted

what brands can i look at

I've got same set, first one lasted 20 years just bought another to replace it.

Worrth noting they are stepped in thousands of an inch with metric equivalent underneath but never been an issue for me.

Snap-On had an interchangable set with handles but they didn't go down thin enough for motorcycle use, looked a handy set!.

My draper set still going strong.
Brought back in the 80's.
Any one in Trowbridge may recall Jimmy Lads. I got them in their closing sale.

They get used on fire relay contacts, setting up the Gap.

My Mac tools set is good, but the thiner ones are bent .

I forgot to put. I am fastidious about oiling them thoroughly before they go away. Even paw prints corrodes them if they’re good ones.

Helps them last longer

just a half decent set for not a lot of money are ok. as above just oil them when you put them away

I’m partial to a Moore and wright 493 set, but I appreciate most don’t work in thou anymore. Otherwise any metric set with a 0.02mm in will likely be half decent

I lost my snap on ones so replaced them with sykes pickavant go no go feeler guages which are much nicer to use than the standard one thickness ones.

There is something to be said for buying a cheapish set, you won't mind cutting them up to make shims. I've got M&W, Facom and several others.

Thing was.. The Snap-On ones were very good on steps. Lotsa feelers. But, when a bit corroded, the etched sizes dissapeared.

i had a set that went slightly rusty so i spread them out and lightly bead blasted them . all of a sudden they all bent round and it let the stress out of them ended up using them for shims

Surely if they rust you just bin them, sanding them down chances the dimensions.

Ah, but since rust thickens them, a controlled sanding, checked with the micrometer, gets them back to size

I just get cheapo ones, they always get bugga'd with ongoing use anyway, and as Jezguz says, you don't mind hacking them up for "specials"

Mine are always oily when checking valve clearances, not much chance of them going rusty!.

bought my favorite set off the snap on van thirty five years ago ,, numbers are getting a bit faded now , hey say usa on them , I must look and see what the actual make is ,, but I do like a set with the bend in them half way along ,, , but if yor working on some multivalve stuff its handy to have loose blades and two each of the ones you need , setting up BMW vales is a lot easier with two blades .
