Whenever my dishwasher dies I just end up replacing it with another free one someone is throwing out because they got a newer one or the handle broke etc. I could probably fix them by buying parts but that is never a guarantee so I don't try. Each one normally lasts a few to a couple of years.
The washing machine failed so I spent less than $30 on a few capacitors and a voltage regulator (and a spare). luckily the coating on the board could be broken off easily so it was no problem to fix.
